4/16/07: Wandy Gets Clemensed Again

Wandy pitched his second QS in a row. 6 innings, 93 pitches/60 strikes, 5 hits, NO homeruns, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts with one ER. I guess we need to name him “Mr. April.”

He threw the first pitch of the game for a strike and I thought aw rightttttttt! He threw the next pitch for a strike, too, and Hanley Ramirez hit it all the way to the wall in left center. Ramirez decided to run on Burke’s weak arm to stretch a triple into a inside the parker and Burke threw a bullet to Loretta, the cutoff man and Loretta threw to Brad Ausmus, who nailed Ramirez at home. Burke might not be the best CF in the world, but he sure never misses the cutoff man.
After that, Wandy cruised until the 5th inning, when he gave up a single and then a run scoring double. Wandy concentrated, struck out the next two guys, gave up a piddly single, then struck out the last guy. He’s really pitching a lot better than he did before, thank you Brad Ausmus for keeping him focused. I was seriously worried when I saw Loretta at SS again, but fortunately, not a single ball was hit his way.

Wandy was in line for the W, but unfortunately, Rick White blew the save. So much for Wandy getting all these wins he didn’t earn with good pitching.

The fans have been screaming for Wandy to be removed/sent down/released, but so far he has pitched as well as Roy and Sampson and far better than Jennings or Woody. I’m seeing the tough, gritty little bantam rooster who pitched 4 innings in the WS after Roger pulled his hammy in the cold.

I know that there are LOTS of fans who want Brad Ausmus removed and some hitting guy installed in his place, but he has value over his bat, or lack of it. Getting Quality Starts is actually worth something, not nothing, even if I can’t put an exact number value on it.

Wandy would have gotten the win if Biggio hadn’t blown it for him in the fifth. Biggio was RUNNING ON THE PITCH that Loretta singled to RIGHT and Biggio stopped at SECOND? WTF? Biggio should have picked up Mansolino as any good Little Leaguer knows but Biggio makes the rookie mistake of stopping to look back at the play instead of just picking up the third base coach. He should have been on third with no outs and easily scored on the fly ball by Lee.
I’m happy for Mo, though he got lucky that the Fish screwed up and did a Bad News Bears routine on his pop-up. And Qualls was nails, which made up for White’s sloppy pitching.
And what the heck is up with Miller??? He can’t get anyone out anymore. Sheesh.
Sure am glad we won, but we can’t count on winning those type of games most of the time — we’re not going to get so many gifts from the other team.
Let’s see how tomorrow goes with Roy on short rest after throwing 120. Does this make sense? Not unless you’re just hoping for 5 from Roy and give the ‘pen some innings, since they haven’t been used too much…

    yeh
i should have mentioned that. biggio didn’t used to do that stuff.
i don’t know what the heck is wrong with miller – remember at the beginning of last year he couldn’t get anyone out neither and finally admitted his arm hurt?
we have barzilla and mclemore at AAA, it’s not like there is no lefty anywheres
i am not real too happy bout roy going out there neither, but i just hope he does not get hurt. i wouold guess it is gonna be a bullpen night too, unless he cruises and our guys hit like crazy.

I finally got to watch a whole game (All of those day games are hard a brother with a 9-to-5!), and I must say I was impressed with Wandy; he showed more mental toughness (specifically in the Dan Uggula at bat) than we’ve seen in a while. When Ugly got up 3-0 (with Miggy on deck) I turned to my buddy and said there’s no way he gets out of this alive.
Wrong. Three man-sized fastballs and the inning is over. Last year he used to get rocked in those ‘make-or-break’ at bats.
Hope he can keep it up, cus that was good stuff last night:-)

i agree that Wandy is showing more maturity and stability this year. Let’s see if he can continue; it sure is great to see (especially with JJ out and WW throwing BP).
Perhaps Roy wants to pitch today because he’d rather pitch in warm, cozy MMP on one less day than wait and pitch in cold, HR-happy Cin.
Seems fair to me, since he suffered through that siberia experience last time.
And yeah, I remember Miller last year; I s’pose the good news is that he was pretty darn good once he got fixed up.

well, i am on the books as a wandy fangrrrl for 2 years now.
and i REALLY want this to be the year he has a good year ALL year.
even just to shut up all the “fans” and sportswriters who wanted him gone forever a LONG time ago.
i am not real too happy that none of the wriers in this morning’s rag even mentioned wandy’s great pitching until as an afterthought in the last paragraph.
yeah, i can understand preferring the Box to the freezing cold GAB. or evn the hot GAB.
i just hope we get a HUGE lead like 15-0 and roy can go after having only throwing 50 pitches in the first 5 innings. and yeah, i DO expect to see bork. and lidge.
