6/14/12: Astros Cain’t Hit Matt And He Throw A Perfect Game

This was, what, the 5th no-hitter this year? Second Perfect Game.

I should complain about Ted Barrett’s enormous strike zone, but that would sound like me being a sore loser.

I have seen, I think, 6 no hitters from start to finish, not including, unfortunately, Mike Scott’s.

Man, I had a feeling when couldn’t nobody hit any pitch squarely – except Chris Snyder, in the 6th, who came about 5 feet from hitting the ball off or over the LF wall. And when Jordan Schafer’s sure double gapper got caught, I was reminded of Jim Edmonds making that impossible catch on Brad Ausmus’ sure fire game winning double to right center.

11 K in the first 6 innings and I was thinkin about the Kerry Wood game back in 98. Yes, I swear I remember seeing it, although you know how memories are. But he ended up with just 14 Ks.

Matt Cain has always been a really good and extremely underrated pitcher because he has usually had terrible run support.

sigh

I called this outcome a few hours ago. Matt Cain is a *PITCHER*……….and
J.A. Happ is NOT. It will be REAL interesting to see what Luhnow does about Happ. No matter that the Astros WILL be the worst team in the MLB this season….
you just CAN NOT keep this guy in the rotation. Like I said earlier, Luhnow WILL be adding another pitcher……….and SOON. Matt Cain was AWESOME!! Becky:)

matt cain has always been a top pitcher – he never got media respect because he doesn’t get a lot of wins – poor run support, unlike tonight. i don’t know if luhnow will actually trade anyone who is good or young for something better than happ. to get a good young pitcher, you have to trade something that someone else wants. and what other teams want is altuve, lowrie and myers. we could lose myers, but i’m not so sure bout getting rid of altuve so quick.

the way the Organization is talking, they are more likely to promote one of the traded for pitchers at AA or dallas keuchel at AAA. or (shudder) bring up armando gallaragha.

not sure we’re gonna be THE worst team again, but definitely in the top, i mean bottom, five

Luhnow and Crane aren’t Ed Wade and Drayton McLane. I doubt this GM will
keep Happ. Time to cut bait.

I happened to be at the game for the last three innings — the crowd was ELECTRIC. Standing and screaming on every two strike count, going crazy with every play — wow!

Eerie that the ‘stros have now been on the short end of two of the three best (worst) game scores in history (this one, Wood’s 20 Ks).

The Giants’ pitching staff is pretty incredible — and that’s with Lincecum pitching like Happ. Amazing.

    The Astros got Cain’ed.

The Astros were Abel and Cain was Cain.

I remember Kerry Wood’s 20+ K performance against the Astros back then. Not a good feeling.

But Nolan’s no hitter and Mike Scott’s no hitter, yep, great times. I remember Craig (former Giants manager) kvetching about Mike Scott’s scuffing his splitter even though Craig was the ONE who taught him that nasty split finger. Mike had a large enough hand to make the split finger really drop off the table like that.

And remember how he terrified the 1986 Mets..they wanted NOTHING to do with Mike in Game 7 so they hadda win Game 6 at ALL COSTS. He definitely got into every Met player’s head that series. LOL

  6. Eric says:

Linececum’s problems apparently stem from his pitching form..it’s so unorthodox and herky jerky that it was really a matter of time until it caught up to him physically.

He might not return to his previous form again, but who knows ?

    becky,

i know drayton days are gone, but just the same, getting a new pitcher costs money – which they don’t want to spend, or something good, which they don’t want to spend.

    steve,

i was wondering if you were there. huge crowd, on a wednesday night. been a LONG LONG time since it’s happened here.

and seems that pretty much EVERY year the giants pitching staff is amazing. they’re great developing pitchers.

  8. Becky says:

Fine……..if you don’t wanna spend for another pitcher, just throw your cards down and walk away. Wandy is the ONLY pitcher who has been sorta stable, and even HE has had a string of bad luck recently. When your starting pitcher can’t go 3 innings………your in B I G trouble. Luhnow HAS to get another arm or we lose every single game from here on out. PERIOD. The bull pen has been worked to death, and right now I’d move Myers back in the rotation, just to have at least one more arm. I’m not real happy………..can you tell?

  9. Steve says:

Hi Lisa, I’m trying to root for my “new” local team — I’ve been here 35 years, but still can’t quite shake the ‘stros yet. It’s a process. I’m getting better in that I pay attention to the Giants more and the ‘stros less. I should be okay by the time they stop playing real baseball next season.

you gotta remember that crane has massive debt from buying this club and they want to cut costs as much as possible. it’s nice if they win, but cutting costs is where it’s at

i seriously SERIOUSLY doubt myers is going anywhere near a rotation for the simple reason that he has more trade value as a closer – not to mention that he hasn’t prepared to go 5+ innings at a time.

crane/luhnow aren’t gonna go BUY some expensive guy to trade for someone who makes the big bux. so that means a trade. and we don’t have any prime chips except for altuve and lowrie. maybe not even lowrie because folks is still lookin real suspiscious-like at him, expecting him to break down again. do you seriously want jimmy EFF paredes and his 18 errors at second? myers/lyon/wandy/clank aren’t gonna go until july/august, AND i know the club has told the media that they think that (no i’m not kidding you) the pitchers at AA are gonna be in the majors later this year. Unless they get hurt, of course. So seriously, unless we get a weiland type guy, i really REALLY doubt we’re gonna get a new pitcher.

i’m not real too happy neither, but then again, it’s not like i feel let down because i knew how things were gonna be from the minute buddy boy let crane buy the team (with non-existent money).
