12/10/11: Ex-Stro Jason Lane Returns To The Bigs As A LOOGY/PH

Seems like yesterday that Jason Lane was a great AAA hitter at age 23 who was more than ready for the majors, but spent most of his time benched in favor of some veteran. He crashed and burned after the 05 season, was traded offf the team in 07 and spend the next 4 years in the minors.

But he was a lefty pitcher in college – like The Rickey, he bats righty and throws lefty – and has pitched a few innings over the past few year – 20 IP over 12 games with a 4.12 ERA – 7 H, 7 R, 12 K, 2 BB.

The Dbax have signed him to be the lefty version of Brooks Kieschnick and Micah Owings. The boy will be 35 at the start of ST. Man I can’t believe he’s that old. Time flies. Good luck to him – it is not real too often a guy can come back after 4 years in the minors and succeed.

But it is baseball, and youneverknow…

If Jason were born ten years later without living in the shadow of the Killer B’s, he would have been at least treated like JD and promoted from double A by having the team playing him every day. The fact that he was considered a slugging right-fielder he would be much more appreciated nowadays.

I’m envisioning a spot start vs the Astros, allowing no hits, even with pinch hitters…

  3. Lisa Gray says:

    wouldn’t THAT be something…

  4. Bruce says:

The Shark now the Shahk? Hmmm…..

  5. Bruce says:

    Pay-back time for Bagwell?

  6. Lisa Gray says:

    payback for bagwell?????

here and i’m getting ready to write my annual entry on how it looks as if he’s gonna be permanently screwed over by the BBWAA who thinks that anyone who hit homers shot steroids and anyone else didn’t.

  7. Bruce says:

I see a lot more in Melancon than just an expendable reliever.

  8. Bruce says:

Having said that, I am very happy for him and his baseball career, like I was for Berkman, Pence and Bourn.

  9. Lisa Gray says:

apparently the red sox do too – i’m reading they are going to make him their closer. he better hope that cutter keeps working.

poor lowrie and weiland had to try to find something politically correct to say – they are happy to be wanted and to be playing for brad mills – something like that

  10. Bruce says:

I suppose a chance to play and prove themselves. Wonder if Towles will come out of his funk in Minnesota org. Still think he has skills, always seemed like a lack of confidence. There are examples of late bloomers, recently Ryan Vogelsong.

  11. Bruce says:

“It was so different in Houston…”

  12. Becky says:

Bruce——Cooper ruined Towles. He went to the media, and through JR under the bus MANY TIMES. I hope he does well, and latches on with the big club. Becky:)

  13. Lisa Gray says:

i agree about the lack of confidence with JR. kind of a shame – wish he’d go to a sports psychologist. he looked like a different guy in sept 07 when he was first called up. the team never wanted him back after cooper messed with his head and unlike barry bonds, he couldn’t use that as a motivating factor.

i also hope he does well – he’s good enough to catch for wandy, he’s good. wandy preferred him to quintero, which tells me something…

    bruce,

melancon celebrated BIG time when he found out he was going to a club that WANTS to win, no wonder. you gotta really feel for guys who are dumped here
