8/31/05 – Pettitte vs Brandon Claussen

Well, that was the BEST I have seen Wandy pitch this year. He needed 55 pitches for 5 innings, gave up 4 H, 1 BB, 1 ER and 4 K. He had GREAT control – unlike his usual outings. He had THREE 1,2,3 innings. He gave up a double, a RBI single and a BB in the 5th, but worked out of it – he usually does. One of these days (like in the off-season) I am gonna do some serious work at look at pitchers like him and Kirk Rueter who change how they pitch with guys on base.

Anyway, Wandy was pulled for a PH with men on first and third with no out in the bottom of the fifth – I was REAL surprised Phil pulled him when he pitching so well – but it worked out, as Mike Lamb HIT an RBI single, which started a 5 run inning- topped off by Morgan Ensberg’s 34th HR of the year.

Luke Scott went 2 fer 4 and looked good out there in left – that boy got a GOOD arm, strong and accurate. I hope he keeps doing well – we lost a pitcher over him. OK, not the best pitcher ever, but we could have sent Mike Burns back down and he would have been back in 2 days and that way, we wouldn’t have lost anyone… But I like Luke and I hope he’s the hitter we’ve been talking bout we needed. Him and Todd Self.

And speaking of relievers, Phil ran just about everyone out there – Springer, Gallo, Qualls, Wheeler and then BRAD. And Brad decided to, um, make it interesting. He was a little, um, wild with the slider and a few too many FB caught a little too much of the plate and one run scored on a GO before he finally got Encarnacion to K with 2 on and 2 out.

I had to put my young ones to bed after the 7th. I had to read them stories and sing them each a lullaby. I came back to the ninth inning, bags juiced and only one out and Lidge on the mound. I thought he was cleaning up someone else’s mess, since it wasn’t a save situation. After the game I looked at the play-by-play on ESPN.com and discovered the truth. Aieeee! I hope he was just rusty from not pitching since Friday.

    hi annie!!!!
it’s a funny thing about brad.
every now and then, like, he just can’t get the freaking ball over the plate, or he just can’t get it to move. not sure why, cuz i’ve seen it happen when he’s rusty, when he’s not, even at what should be the third out…
i don’t think he’s hurting, like he was earlier this year, but youneverknow…

BTW, my kids are starting to REALLY holler if i make them go to bed in the middle of a game, now. they gonna be FANS, yes.
