A Little Respect For Ex-Stro Roy Oswalt For Throwing A Shutout And Starting Game #300

From Lee Sinins at www.baseball-encyclopedia.com

Roy Oswalt just threw his 300th career start. I know we are all supposed to be delighted that he’s gone and replaced with J Happ, but Roy is a far better pitcher than he ever received credit for by the northeast media – and now that he is there instead of stuck in this here out of the way tiny place, hopefully he’ll get the recognition he should have gotten a LONG time ago.

Oswalt became the 11th pitcher with 300+ starts and an ERA 1.00+ better than the league average.

    …………………………….DIFF…PLAYER…LEAGUE……..GS
1    Pedro Martinez………1.52 …. 2.93 ……… 4.45 ……… 409
2    Lefty Grove…………..1.36 …. 3.06 ……… 4.42 ……… 457
3    Roger Clemens………1.26 ….. 3.12 ……… 4.38 ……… 707
4    Lefty Gomez………….1.16 ….. 3.34 ……… 4.50 ……… 320
5    Roy Halladay…………1.15 ….. 3.33 …….. 4.48 ………. 317
6    Whitey Ford…………..1.10 …. 2.74 ……… 3.84 ……… 438
7    Roy Oswalt…………….1.08 …. 3.20 …….. 4.28 ………. 300
8    Tim Hudson……………1.07 …. 3.41 …….. 4.48 ………. 340
9    Walter Johnson……….1.07 …. 2.17 …….. 3.24 ……… 666
10   Randy Johnson………1.06 …. 3.29 …….. 4.36 ……… 603
11   Kevin Brown…………..1.03 …. 3.28 …….. 4.30 ……… 476

You notice that there sure nuf are a WHOLE lot of names missing from this here list – such as Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver. In fact, a rather significant number of pitchers who won 300 games are missing from this here list. Guess they all just “knew how to win…”

sigh

It hurt to type “Ex-Stro” next to Roy’s name. I would bet that Kevin Brown gets very VERY few votes for the Hall even though he was an incredibly better pitcher than he ever got credit for. Same with Hudson and Oswalt. Pedro SHOULD get a heck of a lot more credit for his unbelieveable greatness than he actually does. Especially as so many experts thought he was too small to pitch. Ain’t the size of the Dog in the fight….

I hated to see Roy gone, but he is cause he wanted to be gone. I think in the long run getting Happ a very good pitcher and 5 years younger than Roy and a potential good slugger like Wallace 24 years old will turn out to be a very good trade for us.
hopefully Oswalt will get another crack in the WS, he surely deserves it.

i would LUUUUVVVVV to see roy get another crack at the WS – he wasn’t exactly at his best in game 3. i would like to see them give wallace a real chance, but i got this bad BAD feeling it is gonna be clank at first next year – 19 mill talks, you know. we’ll see how happ does – we got plenty of time to find out.

    becky,
i am happily surprised seeing how well wilton lopez (before he got overused) and abad have done. hope they don’t turn into arias and sammy gervacio
    - i would really LOVE to see bogu on the team next year again

i agree with you on that and i fear you could be right on them playing that BOZO Lee at first next season, BIG MISTAKE. If that does happen, who do you think will get the LF job, Bogesevic or Bougeous? or maybe some form of platooning of the two. Please don’t tell me it will be Michaels.

i really don’t think that michaels is a full time guy. at this point, i wouldn’t mind a Bourgeois/Bogusevic platoon. but i WOULD mind wallace rotting at AAA. but unfortunately, they HAVE to do something with clank and i seriously doubt that mclane will let him be a 19 mill bench guy
