Like that is gonna do any good.
Which reminds me – I have more than a little problem with all the people who claim that “tougher steroid testing” has caused all the hitting slumps.
Because testing for drugs in 05 and then having tougher and more frequent tests in 06 causes batting slumps 4 years later.
sigh
Wandy pitched great today – 5 of 6 1,2,3 innings, but unfortunately, he made 1 bad pitch, a hi inside FB to Matt Holiday with 2 on which went 330′ into the second row of the Crawford Boxes, about 6 seats from the foul pole and that was all she wrote.
Pedro Feliz started in place of CJ again and left 2 on in the 3rd, 1 on in the 5th and 2 on in the 7th. And except for a 6 pitch K, did his usual getting out on the first or second pitch.
Not that Berkman, Pence or Clank exactly were Mr. Slugger Persons out there neither.
sigh
Good thing there’s a break now because I need it as much as the rest of the team does. Bourn has been slumping lately and I hope that he steals home with the winning run in the ASG.
To change topics briefly, Richard Justice has a bolg post up asking if people would want Nolan Ryan to buy the Astros if the Rangers deal fell through.
Of course everyone sez YESSSSSSSS
but me, I ask, yeah, I know he’s a “franchise icon” but exactly WHAT does that have to do with owning/running a baseball team? Why do people really think there is no difference between owning a minor league franchise and a major league franchise? Why on earth do people think he would be any more hands off than McLane? What exactly is it he is supposed to have done with the Rangers since he got there to make them a winning team? Besides slag Kevin Millwood and Matt Harrison’s arms, I mean?
It sure sounds like the Prince Charming fantasy to me.
And speaking of fantasies, anyone taken a look at how our supposedly great prospects have done this year? It isn’t pretty…
And I think I’m gonna go and look at our minor leaguers

I see a 23-year old catcher who is next to impossible to run on, calls a good game, works the count, and takes his walks.
His overall production has been lackluster, but I expected that. It will take him a year or two to adjust to the big leagues because he’s so young and was pushed through the system so fast.

i’m more than willing to give the guy a REAL chance – which is more than what his predecessor got before he got run out of town on a rail
but besides arguello, i sure don’t see any minor leaguer who looks like a STAR and for some reason, they want to bury arguello – gues he must remind them of luke scott
I agree that we lack impact prospects/future stars. I think we have a lot of guys who could be above average regulars though, and that’s important to have. I don’t think Arguello is a star either, Lyles… maybe. He’ll need more velocity though.
Some of the guys in the lower minors have huge upside, but no track record. I won’t call any of them future stars until they show more in pro ball but I’m still excited to see what the farm system looks like in a year or two.
I’m hoping Roy brings back an impact prospect who can be in the majors soon. The Yankees offered Jesus Montero for Cliff Lee, the Twins offered Aaron Hicks… those are the kinds of prospects I hope Roy can bring back, who have star potential. But I kind of doubt it will happen.

jesus montero most certainly can’t catch and right now, he looks like a prince fielder 1B DH type guy
if the stros wait until a little closer to the deadline when the top teams are a lil more desperate, we might could get something a lil better, now that cliff lee has already been traded
arguello is not a star, but he certainly looks as if he has outpitched lyles and yeah i know all about “potential” and lyles is 19 etcetcetc. and i don’t see any point in throwing away ANY guy who looks as if he could contribute – if not to our team, then in a trade
i know there were more than a few teams who were interested in towles in ST – same with maysonet – but noooooooo, we’d rather they rotted than trade them and get something we might could actually USE
I know Montero can’t catch, I was envisioning him as the 1B of the future.
The official measurment of Holiday’s Homer was 350 feet.
It might do some good., we can’t really say yet can we. At least Bagwell should be bringing a winning attitude with him, something this team has not had in the past 3 seasons or so.
you are dead (hahaha) right about no winning attitude. that walked out the door when drayton got rid of most of the team.
only problem with bringing a winning attitude is that then drayton will think that ain’t nothin needin fixin. and how i absolutely HATE saying that
as for the supposed 350′ homer, it’s only 315 to the corner and according to someone who was sitting there, it wasn’t more than a few feet away…
lisa
you must enjoy being a martyer. with you there is absolutely no hope, no fixes, nothing but total negativety. you are against every thing that might even slightly become a positive and you are a very over opinionated critic of everyone or player who is not named bourn, rodriguez, or
Jimbo, we have no ML team, as evidenced by our record, and we have very little in the farm system. We’re cutting payroll, our stars are expensive, underperforming, and past their primes. The owner is a micromanager and a mediocre GM, and our GM isn’t any better. What fixes or hope do you expect?
All true, Neil. Sadly.
that may all be true Neill, so that being the case why even bother with this awful. terrible team and organization that has no future, no hope of ever getting better, and would be a waste of time to try any fixes to get better.
I have been a diehard fan since there inception as the Colt 45′s in 1962 and i just turned 71 years old , so with the stituation here so gloomy, bleak, and with no hope for the near future, i would just be wasting my love, energy, and time support this hopeless bunch of losers.
So i think that i will just bow out and ride off into the sunset and look for some other worth while interests to pursue. Good luck to all of you who wish to suffer and waste your time in supporting and following this bunch of losers.
Baggy knows the score with Uncle Grocery Man. Baggy was here before Uncle Grocery, and he’ll be here long after Uncle Grocery. He knows that Houston idolizes him, and that it don’t care much for Uncle Grocery, making Baggy immune to Drayton’s standard blame-casting routine. Every time Uncle Grocery exhorts the team with one of his stupid cheerleader “Who’s ready to be a CHAMPION?” speeches, Baggy can just chuckle at the wackiness.
Jimbo, if you go back through every single game post this year — and I really mean go back and read every single one and keep track — you’ll find that Lisa is no more positive or negative than the results. When the ‘stros win or do well, Lisa does a fine job of acknowledging that. And when they screw up, that also gets nailed.
I’ve been reading her for years, have you? If you have, you know this is true. Lisa’s strength is in going beyond the simple balls and strikes, outs and runs, to discuss other factors affecting the future of the team, including the farm system, executive management, free agency, money and team budget, and what other teams are doing or not doing.
I’ve been rooting for the team as long as you — I lived through the startup 60s, the frustrating 70s, the playoff teases in the 80s, the horrid early 90s, and the super cool 1997-2005 era. I spent $4000 I didn’t really have to fly to Houston and scalp tickets to sit in the second row of the Crawford boxes the World Series. So I can be a giddy fanboy just like anyone else. But right now, this club is as bad or worse in all areas — similar to the early 70s or 90s. I’m looking forward to getting out of this phase and into a better one. But we’re a ways off from that.
jimbo
i look at it like this
suppose the roof of your house is leaking. there are a lot of ways you can feel about it
1 – like, so what?
2 – don’t bother to find out where the leak is, just send husby-doo up to clean out the gutters, hope that works
3 – figure that since it seems to leak more in the kitchen, just pur a few new shingles over bad-looking ones over the kitchen. also get pissed off if someone tells you that this is no way to fix a leaky roof
4 – just put a whole bunch of new cheap shingles over the street side of the roof so it looks good
5 – go up on the roof in the 90+ degree texas sun, take off the bad shingles, replace all the wet rotting stuff that was under the leaking shingles, re-do the roof – which costs a LOT of time/money
me, i am damm tired of drayton’s refusal to fix the roof properly. all he wants to do is either ignore it and say the leak is the rain’s fault, or patch with a couple of new shingles, or put up new cheap shingles over the part of the roof that people see from the street (which is the bagwell signing)
i am not saying a roof can’t be fixed or we should just keep living with a moldy, leaky roof. i am saying to fix the roof the RIGHT way!!!
- also, happy birthday!!!!!
i’m only half your age, but it doesn’t mean i can’t love my bunch of crappy players as much as you do.
but i DO know that the hiring of jeff bagwell, who, by the way, has never done ANY coaching at ANY level, is merely putting lipstick on a pig…

HOGWASH
LISA
HAVE fun with your pathetic Astros, for probably the next 10 or 12 years at least.
I am out of here.
on an unrelated note, somehow or another carlos lee didnt make it to a voluntary workout in the worst season of his professional career!
jimbo…..Bye bye!!!!!!!
paul….yeah, I saw that. INTERESTING, Wade says he won’t be in the line-up
Friday. Kinda cutt’en off your nose to spite your face. All was (and is) quiet on
the front, sooo no news is ok news….I guess.
The Bourgoisie is getting restless.
Lee had flight connection problems in Panama and called Brad Mills twice about it.
