7/30/05: From Small Ball to Long Ball

Testing 1,2,3
- OK dear readers – this entry will be short – will see if things working better today.
Thank yall for your patience.

Last night, Wandy Rodriguez pitched well (either that, or the Mets suck) but elt us FIRST praise Wandy, who went 6 innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 walks and only 2 ER. Wandy is incredibly good, ESPECIALLY for a rookie, at bearing down with MOB and getting out the rest of the batters – often with GIDP. He also don’t change his motion in the stretch and the changeup moves well. I can’t get over how his motion looks SO much like Glavine’s.

Quintero was catching. He has this reputation for a great arm, but Cliff Floyd stole second base and caught Quintero off guard – his throw went into center for an error, advancing Floyd to third – I don’t think he would have scored if he hadn’t gotten to third, but Wandy took the ER anyway. Also, the Jackal, who hasn’t been stealing worth a bucket of warm spit this year, managed a SB.
But in this game, we won with the HR – Craig Biggio hit his fourth in 7 days (who does he think he is – Barry in 01?) and Morgan Ensberg hit his 27th.

We now lead the WC by 1 game.

And I can’t believe I just wrote that last sentence on July 30th.
The Stros and the A’s (also left for dead at the end of May by the Experts Who Know) have the best records in baseball since June 1 – actually since May 24.

Wouldn’t it ROOL to have 2 teams with so many rookies like us in the WS???!!!
(Fox would NOT agree…)

Did you even watch the game? I am not trying to say that Quintero is a great defensive catcher, but the blame for the stolen bases has to be shared by Rodriguez. For a left-handed pitcher, he did a poor job of holding runners on first. He hardly varied the length of time he held the ball between pitches and twice in the game he ignored Beltran, who got huge jumps off 2nd base (first time the ball was put in play for the 3rd out). Also, on Beltran’s steal of 3rd in the sixth, Ensberg was sleeping and didn’t even cover the bag so there wasn’t even an attempt made. The throw on Floyd was bad. It short-hopped Biggio, but he tried to slap at it and let it get thru into center. I think he would have scored on Piazza’s flare regardless, because there were two outs and he would have been running on contact from 2nd.
