Jon Lieber, RHP (dude, don’t it suck to pitch in an EXTREME hitters park? Wish you was still with the Yanks? Was it worth the extra 2 mill a year to getcher butt kicked around like this?????)
2nd round draft pick in 1992 by the Royals out of South Alabama College
but ended up getting traded to Pitt and was pitching in the bigs mid 94 – started and relieved there for a few years, then was a full time starter 97 and 98. He did pretty well, considering he pitched for such a bad team, and ended up 38 – 49 with a 4.06 ERA.
Guess he was getting too expensive for the el-cheapos in Pitt, so they traded him to the Cubs for someone or other.
Did pretty darn well there in Chicago – even had a 20 W season with a 3.80 ERA in 01 and he had an even lower ERA – 3.70 in 02 when he blew out his elbow and needed Tommy John.
Well, it was the last year of his contract and the Cubs said byby, but the Yanks gambled and figgered he might could be worth it in 04 when he was ready to pitch again, and he was and the gamble paid off – he went 14 – 8 over 176.2 IP with a 4.33 ERA and did well in the playoffs.
He had an option for 05, but NY declined it, figgering they could re-sign him for 2 mill a year less, but Philly made him an offer he couldn’t refuse, so he left the Big Apple and went to Coors East… (home ERA 5.37, BAA .303)
this year: 9 – 9 in 21 GS with 1 CG – 24 HR (WHOA) 27 BB, 79 K over 125.1 IP with a 4.88 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a.285 BAA
vs.HOU: 7 – 8 in 18 GS and 6 in relief with 4 CG – HR, 31 BB, 106 K over 131.1 IP with a 3.56 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a.248 BAA
