J.R. Towles Must Have Made Someone REALLY Angry

J.R..Towles and his .191 BA just got sent down to Double A. This way, we can keep Quintero and his .201 BA up here where he belongs. Oh yeah – and we called up Kevin Cash – he’s 4 fer 23 at Triple A – 1 walk and a lot of Ks.

Well THIS will sure nuff help the offense.

And The Vaunted Jason Castro?

He’s hitting .221 – 15 fer 68 with 16 walks for a nice .619 OPS.

Big Deal.

I don’t know what Towles did, but he must have SERIOUSLY pissed someone off. Probably Roy – don’t ask me how, I don’t know yet. (Either that, or Drayton must have come up to him and said something about champion and JR said something like – go look in the mirror, fool…) He better go and try his darndest to get traded to some other organization because his time here is OVAH.

is it possible that the pitchers just do not like the way he catches/calls pitches?
i do not understand why they didn’t give him the opportunity to play everyday HERE instead of making it such a huge deal that he get to play everyday in AA.
i find this move to be pretty disconcerting- and i can only imagine whats going on inside the clubhouse.

Calling up Kevin Cash isn’t that surprising… Look at his former teams: TB, BOS & the YANKEES who won the ALC or even the WS in the recent years LOL It doesn’t really matter how good or how bad the ex-phillies or the ex-sox players are after the glory days, their auras being part of the former champions are the only crucial fact that counts… well for Ed at least.

  3. Steve says:

His CAREER batting average is .185 and OPS is .535. This type of person should never bat.

  4. Jimbo says:

i like j r towles, but lets face the facts that he is just a good AAA player and nothing more.

  5. Becky says:

There’s a lot we don’t knw, but I’m with you Lisa……..*something* else is the
reason he’s not going to be with the Astros. My opinion is he’ll get released by the end of May. Becky:( :( :(

  6. Bruce says:

Maybe they should have sent him to Single A. Maybe they’d feel a whole lock better about themselves.

  7. Bruce says:

So now that Towles is gone, will the pitchers stop throwing the ball 6 feet off the plate or bounce it in front on a two strike count? Good luck getting these other guys to dive for those.

  8. Lisa Gray says:

he had 40 AB and he isn’t hitting worse than anyone else on this team not named bourn. he HAD to have seriously pissed someone off…

i hope he gets released. he can get another chance with another organization.

and kevin cash is hardly a better hitter. will have to see what kind of receiver he is, but towles at least is good at framing pitches and catching balls off the plate and quintero is not good at either

  9. Becky says:

Pitchers did NOT like him. His throws were off line, and he had a hard time
putting the right fingers down. Ala Roy and Meyers. Becky:) :) :)

  10. According to Jim Deshaies, one of the greatest Astros of all time, the team thought that Towles needed to work on his game calling and defense. Castro is at RR, and they want him to play every day, so the only place that Towles could go and play every day and work on stuff was CC. Cash is supposed to be very good at calling games, etc. JD added that Cash was assigned to catch Wakefield’s knuckle ball in Boston.

(OK, I know that JD isn’t one of the greatest Astros, but he WAS part of the ’86 team, which is still my all time favorite.)

  11. Lisa Gray says:

the team thought he needed to work on his DEFENSE?

    riiiiiiiiiiiiiight

just like they think that luke scott couldn’t be a major league player and had too many slumps. you KNOW it is personal. i hope the guy gets his agent to get him released or traded so as he can catch on with another team…

  12. Well, Ed Wade said he needed to work on his defense. Like a lot of other folks, I don’t trust Ed Wade any further than Shawn Chacon can throw him.

  13. Austin says:

That’s the rumor. Word is that a “prominent pitcher” on the Astros didn’t like throwing to him. They only have one prominent pitcher, so that’s pretty easy to nail down. But I don’t know what his problem would be. Look at his numbers throwing to Towles this year. He’s been awesome. Oswalt hasn’t pitched like this over any stretch in three or four years and he’s a notoriously slow starter. April is usually awful for him.

I’m not giving Towles the credit for his success, or anything. I’m just wondering what Roy-O could be so upset about. This whole thing is just baffling.
