Their on the field performance, I mean. You bad BAD boys.
As all yall might could recall from last year, my friend Ann Onnamuss is a long time serious baseball fan and she heads off to Kissimmee (and a few other stadiums, now that Dodgertown is closed) every year to work on her tan and check out the Astros. We all can check the box scores, but we can’t see the team perform and we can’t watch them to see if they are swingin better than they are hitting or working on pitches or wild, or unlucky. And this, my friends, is where trained eyeballs are invaluable. Ann doesn’t work for the Astros or for the Chron or have to try to get athletes to talk to her, so she’s a good observer – and honest.
Before I give all yall her report, I want to remind everyone that it takes hitters a LOT less time to get ready than it does the pitchers, even though pitchers and catchers reported 2 weeks ago. The pitchers are getting themselves back in a groove, working on new pitches, sometimes working with new catchers, with new fielders, and building up arm strength. With that in mind, here goes:
Chris Johnson looked GREAT at the plate but just so-so in field (I still think he should have been the starting 3B this year though – no idea why fast eddie is so gung-ho about feliz… (because he is an ex-Phillie and Fast Eddie is as obsessed about players from his former team as Phil was about ex-Tigers…)
Castro looked VERY good (both at-bat and behind the plate) – certainly looks MLB-ready to me – and Towles looked good at the plate too (he came in to pinch-hit for Lance and stayed in the game as the DH)…Lance looked good too, but he ALWAYS does (LOL)…Bogusevic and Bourn took o-fors but they were both getting some good swings in up there…and GREAT defense at shortstop from both Manzella and Maysonnet (if he doesn’t make the team, it will be a crime – he’s a LOT better than keppinger…
And yeah, I did forget to ask her if it seems to be true that Wandy and Wesley Wright have both gained 35 lbs…
Tomorrow, Roy gets his first start. I see that Eddie has already insisted to reporters that Kaz IS gonna be the starting second baseman. Like, duh, because he is getting paid 5.something mill and the Astros don’t understand the concept of “sunk cost…”
Several more articles on Ed Wade since the Deadspin one – and they all basically say – well, at least he’s not as bad as Dayton Moore. Peachy.
