6/24/09: Brett Eibner And The Last 4 Astros Drafts

I tuned into the CWS just in time to see Brett Eibner, sophomore from Houston now playing for the Arkansas Razorbacks, hit a homer to break up the 11-0 shutout his team was suffering. And darn if I didn’t see a guy named Chad Jones, playing for LSU, smash a double an inning later. And darn if I didn’t see him pitching in lefty relief several times and giving up NO runs, in spite of the fact that he hadn’t EVER pitched before the tournament.

I know those names all right.

Guys we drafted and lowballed back in 07 in an attempt to make Bud Selig happy so he would

would

Ida know. What WOULD he do for the Astros, seeing as how we already had an ASG in 04?

Anyway, I thought I’d go and take a look at the players we drafted the last 4 years – 05, 06, 07 and 08.

Note: DNS – did not sign; OOB - out of baseball

now in majors – none, but 2 players clearly look ML ready and any other club would have called them up, but not our Rookie hating manager…
traded for someone who played for the Astros: none
still playing: (2) AAA; (6) AA; (4) A
crapped out in 06: 1 in A ball, 1 in Rookie ball
crapped out in 07: 6 in A ball, 1 in Rookie ball
crapped out in 08: 6 in A ball, 1 at AA

Whoa

As usual, Drayton was serious about the slot business because almost every HS guy went to college – and they didn’t sign 17 of the last 20 players.

With any luck, they will get 2 ML players, Bud Norris and Chris Johnson out of the Draft, perhaps Jimmy Van Ostrand and Sergio Perez, if he ever pulls himself together.

———————————————

2007 - Tim Purpura, GM; Paul Ricciarini, Scouting Director (this is the – if you thought Drayton was a total cheap dipstick in 06 yew ain’t see nothin yet – draft. OOB – 33 Cody Phipps: crapped out after 11 PA in Rookie ball in 07

42 drafted : 34 signed (trouble is that the guys who DNS were #3, #4, #8, #13, #15)

now in majors – none
traded for someone who played for the Astros: 1 (Matt Cusick)
still playing: (0) AAA; (2 – #5, # 19) AA; (10-13, depending on whether players are on DL or released) A
crapped out in 07: 4 in Rookie, 4 in Low A (26 guys left at end of draft year)
crapped out in 08: 3 in Rookie, 7 in A ball (16 guys left at end of last year)

Of guys left in pro ball in the Astros Organization, only, Collin DeLome appears to have any chance whatsoever of reaching even AAA.

Of the DNS, 3 are stars in college ball and 1 was selected by another club the next year and is excelling

The only reason to not call this particular draft a complete and total waste of time/scouting/money is that one A ball guy was traded for a useful reliever in the ML club.

I don’t know exactly where to lay the blame for this simply dreadful draft, but if all these guys were lowball/guys who would sign for slot picks, then THAT decision rests strictly with Drayton. And the fact that exactly 3 players in this entire draft are not COMPLETE suckage doesn’t say real too much for Drayton’s decision not to spend any real money to purchase young players.

DNS – 50 Jamal Austin: went to UAB

51 drafted : 30 signed

now in majors – none
traded for someone who played for the Astros: none
still playing: (0) AAA; (2) AA; (22) A
crapped out in 08: 5 in Rookie ball, 1 at A-

7 of the players in the 1st 10 rounds are playing well – 2 are already gone (and I’m not sure why one of them didn’t return as he did VERY well). Rounds 19, 37 and 48 are looking decent and may have a chance to succeed to at least AAA.

The remaining players look as if they are barely hanging on by their fingernails.

Interesting that they decided to oust some guys only 18 or 19 years old after only a few IP or PA. Wonder why.

You notice that Ed Wade didn’t sign hardly any of the last 20 picks either.

Other thing – I hate to judge the Astros by other Organizations because the Astros seem to try to keep young players in the minors until they are at least 27 years old, if not older or Designated For Success No Matter What like Jason Castro. And when they finally get around to calling them up, like Maysonet, they glue them to the bench in favor of ANY crappy veteran.

Last thing – the only seriously terrible draft by Purpura was the last one because he didn’t sign ANY player with ANY upside of those he actually did get signed and he only managed to get 1, maybe 2, decent minor leaguers.

That is SAD.

ADDENDUM 6/24/08:

At this time, the Astros have signed 28 of their 51 picks, including 2,3,4,5,6,9,10.

  1. Austin says:

It’s really startling to actually see the list of “did not signs,” especially those high ones you’d have thought they’d really want to lock down. You’re right about Drayton being cheap. Though, I think Drayton is just as much to blame for the veteran craze as Coop and Garner are. Looking at his history with drafts, it seems he doesn’t want to gamble much with his money. He wants to get “proven” guys, and is only willing to take shots if they’re cheap ones (Hawkins, Hampton, Ortiz, Wolf, etc.)

  2. Lisa Gray says:

    yep
    it didn’t exactly start then.
the astros were seriously into the “moneyball” philosophy of concentrating heavily on college players, PARTICULARLY college seniors who were out of options and would sign if picked.
when they had the venezuelan pipeline running smoothly, it wasn’t as obvious/noticeable.
but drayton was FAR from the only guy who saw prospects essentially as trading chips to get “real” major leaguers – he watched walt jocketty do it for years.
    - grinning
one of the reason i liked that 05 team so much is that so many of the players were homegrown young (well, younger than 30) and purpura insisted to drayton that he should stay with them instead of trading them all away for “proven” major leaguers
the other thing that startled me was how many players, especially 17 and 18 year old guys, were discarded so quickly

  3. zomgMatt says:

    Lisa,
Luis Cruz is not OOB. He had arm problems last year, and so the Astros chose to put him in Rookie ball again to start the season (and even if he were promoted it would likely have been to low-A Tri-City, and that’s a short-season league, too). He made his debut last night, throwing six scoreless, no-hit innings, walking two and striking out four.

  4. Lisa Gray says:

    thanx for the info matt
i tried to find info/stats on every single guy who appeared to have good numbers or only a few PAs who had no numbers for 2009 and i couldn’t google up any info on luis cruz
    i’ll fix the entry.
    thx
anyone else who has any info about any of these guys, please let me know if i got anyone wrong

  5. Steve Schramm says:

Really great investigative work, Lisa — amazing.
And now, back to the game — Kep’s hands-of-stones error in the fourth forced Roy to throw 13(!) extra pitches, and many were stress pitches (runners in scoring position). That’s at least one inning, possibly two of Roy’s game life, and probably wore down Roy’s effectiveness. Horrible hidden cost of an error.

  6. zomgMatt says:

I’ve got a few more for you, Lisa. They’re all guys who are in short-season ball (either at Greenville like Cruz or at Tri-Cities). Since those leagues only started up recently, these guys were probably in extended (instructional) spring training, and the Astros never released a list of players doing that.
Kyle Godfrey made his ’09 debut today, tossing six innings, allowing one run.
    http://www.troyrecord.com/articles/2009/06/24/sports/doc4a42fca20dd32012621384.txt
Zach Grimmett should start tomorrow night for Valleycats, too.
    http://www.troyrecord.com/articles/2009/06/20/sports/doc4a3db11198f6e660996611.txt
Beyond that, I wouldn’t make too many judgments about players who have only had a year or two of professional experience.

  7. Lisa Gray says:

    steve,
i was gonna talk about that but was too depressed. and i can’t bring myself to go into plays not made, DPs not turned – over the course of this year…

  8. Lisa Gray says:

    again,
    thx
believe me i TRIED to find everyone. it makes me feel better that they didn’t necessarily get rid of 18 year old kids after 11 PA. i had figured that by june 24, rosters would be complete and correct, but I was obviously wrong.

  9. chuckbo says:

I’m hearing different stories from different bloggers about the 2007 Astros draft. What I remember is that we didn’t have the first or second round picks, but that our picks from rounds 3 and 4 thought they’d be cute and demanded the contract they would’ve gotten if they’d been first round picks.

  10. Lisa Gray says:

i know they wanted more money than slot, but i don’t remember reading that it was actually first round money.
families said that they told the astros how much up front and the astros INSIST that the families increased the demands after being drafted.
which is silly – it is not like they suddenly found out on draft day that the astros had no first or second round pick
especially eibner, who is a houstonian…

  11. chuckbo says:

I’m not going to pretend that I’m an expert on the details.
I’m just going on what another blogger (actually, thinking back, I think it was a podcast from another MVN blogger) had said. So i can’t say for sure that that person wasn’t exaggerating.
My other “home” team is KC, and it was only two years ago that their farm system was the only one in baseball that was rated worse than the Astros. What’s turned it around for them and given us some hope is that they started drafting players based on talent (and then paying the bonuses) instead of just based on signability.

  12. Lisa Gray says:

my understanding is that drayton mclane had a FIT over the amount of dollars paid to chris burke back in 01 – not because he was bad, but because he didn’t want a lot of money paid to prospects.
    period
and the very next year, they found a cheap guy for the first round and paid him like a mill and he developed incapacitating mental illness and there went a mill on nothing.
then bud selig started insisting that no one pay over slot and so drayton told the scouting dept not to pay a penny over slot.
for years, the astros had been picking out college guys, 4th year guys who had no leverage, and of course, they CERTAINLY were not the best players available
but there were more than a few stories about the 07 draft – how parents of players said that the astros offered the slot and refused to talk or negotiate one bit, even though they had previously been told that the kid would not agree to sign for slot and said how much they wanted to sign
i understand that bobby heck refused to work for the astros if they insisted on following that policy and although they aren’t exactly signing guys who drop due to “signability” at least they are making reasonably sure what the kids are going to demand to sign for and not pulling any shtt
i’ll have a little more faith if/when we start signing higher upside prospects (and to be specific. boras clients) AND actually not refusing to promote/play minor leaguers
