6/4/09: Hitter Pence And His 3 RBIs Carry The Astros To Victory

Pence had a great night – went 4 fer 5 including a game tying homer and the game WINNING single, drove in 3 and scored 2.

Moehler was OK – cruised easily through the first 4 innings, then gave up a few singles, then a 3 run homer when he threw a FB mid plate mid thigh to Ian Stewart. In the 6th, he gave up a double, a single then a sac-fly and a W. Even though he was at only 74 pitches, Coop pulled him for The Great Pinch Hitter Jason Michaels, who walked. Bourn walked, but Miggy FO with bases loaded to end the inning and any chance of a W for Moehler.

Byrdak pitched a scoreless 7th.

Marquis promptly gave up a game tying homer to Pence, gave up consecutive singles, then ran into bad luck. Pudge lined out, then Blum hit into a perfect 4-6-3, but the second baseman screwed up the play, so Carlos scored the go-ahead run.

Except for the homer the other day, Carlos hasn’t driven in ANY runs since May 16. He’s still hitting, just not with RISP.

I also should mention that tonight was Chris Sampson’s second 2 inning save. I guess he is allowed to do that because he’s not The Designated Closer.

I don’t suppose I should mention that even with all this recent winning, we’re still in last place in the central – we’re only better than the Nats, Rox and Dbax in the NL. Among all the Roy trade talk is the report of some guy in some Organization/MLB saying that Drayton is going to refuse to trade AWAY players, but he expects to ACQUIRE players.

Sounds like Drayton, that is fer SHER. However, I seriously wonder if he is stubbornly going to stick to that if the Astros are still mired in last place after the break…

Tomorrow, it’s Wandy vs Jason Hummel. I certainly hope that home cooking will get Wandy’s curveball back to its usual filthy form.

For all those people loving Tejada (OPS .922) right now, I have two words: Luke Scott. Current OPS = 1.060
    wow.

  2. Lisa Gray says:

    yep
    AL player of the week
but it was REAL important to get rid of a fielder with a good, strong accurate arm and decent range who was paid minimum, who the fans liked, who was a good hitter because
    because he
    because he
    um
well, not sure why the Organization hated him, but hey, now we have carlos lee at 18.5 mill a year who runs slower than any of my kids, who can’t even make an accurate throw to home from shallow center (and should have thrown to second, anyhow)
    oh
maybe it was because he’s not a Real Man (Tm) and he would tell the manager/coaches if he was too hurt to play instead of going out there, doing a bad job and losing the game for the team like Real Men Geary etc

Please don’t get me started on Luke Scott again. Or on Everett. Or on Anderson. All of them are playing as well as or almost as well as our starters, and definitely better than our reserves.
I don’t understand why Drayton intends to acquire players (I mean LOGICALLY, not because that’s just what he does). But, I will admit he’s in a bit of a tight spot. As much as they need young players to rejuvenate the team, I’d be furious if they traded Oswalt. I want to see him as an Astros his entire career. Or, at least for the entire good part. Berkman’s another fan favorite I don’t want to see traded. That leaves Pence, Lee and Valverde as the good guys they can trade. They just signed Valverde, so he’s not going anywhere. If he trades Lee this early into a huge contract when they got him to save their lineup, he’ll look like an idiot. And if he trades Pence, who was the justification for trading Scott, he’ll look like an idiot. They don’t have a trade that looks good, so I think they should stand pat. But, there’s little chance of that.

Everyone continues to suck with runners in scoring position. 3-11 tonight against the Rockies. Not exactly shut-down pitching they were facing. Though, it’s not as if that mattered with the way Wandy and Backe pitched. But, I’m wondering – why pinch-hit with Kata when he’s not even as good a hitter as Wandy? Come to think of it…HOW IS KATA ON A MAJOR LEAGUE ROSTER!?

  5. Lisa Gray says:

ed wade likes kata for some reason i don’t get
    same with erstad and michaels
and yeh, this entire team SUX with hitting with MOB, basically – or when they hit, it’s singles and they don’t drive in runs
    sigh

  6. Austin Swafford says:

Erstad makes sense. Maybe they’re giving him too many chances and expecting too much, but they do have a reason to expect SOMETHING from him. They have no reason to expect anything from Kata and Michaels, yet they’re treating them as if they do.

  7. Lisa Gray says:

    kata never hit for spit
erstad had a surge last year and he has sunk below even the suckage that he was as a white sox
as for keppinger hitting a rough patch in may – well, he is STILL out hitting kata, michaels and erstad COMBINED in may

you got that right lisa, erstad, michaels and kata really have sucked badly. I for the life of me can’t see how we can go any further with these pretenders. our pinch hitters are something like 7 for 70,come on. also when we had smith up here he was 0 for 25. this has got to be the worst bench aside from keppinger and maysonet that the astros have ever had in my memory. with just a few more pinch hits we might have won a couple more games.
I also like your idea of moving miggy to third and giving a shot to Manzella at short or if they wouldn’t do that at least maysonet; but i would sure like to see a manzella and maysonet ss and 2b combo.and by moving miggy to third that would sure strenghen our if defense a hundredfold and i also believe we wouldn’t lose much at all on offense .
