I guess I forgot him because everyone else seems to have forgotten him too.
Sergio Perez, RHP, age 24, was picked in the second round of the 06 draft. He threw 16 good innings at A ball that year, then, well, let’s say, wasn’t as good in high A in 07 – 25 GS over 128 IP – 4.00 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 9 H/9 IP, 0.6 HR/9, 2.6 BB/9 and 6.5 K/9.
He was hurt most of last year, but threw 27 reasonable innings at AA, 2.30 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 3 HR, 8 BB, 18 K.
He had a groin injury in April, came back in May, then fractured his little finger at the end of the month, then threw 9 innings in relief at the end of August.
He pitched in the AFL this winter, started 7 games, threw 23 innings with an ERA of 3.52 with a 1.61 WHIP: 26 H, 2 HR, 11 BB, 15 K and 6 HBP. Well, it IS an extreme hitters’ league…
(By the way, Bud Norris also pitched, relieved in 12 games over 19 IP – 14 H, 1 HR, 2 BB, 14 K – 1.89 ERA, 1.42 WHIP. And Brad James pitched as well, only not very well – started 1 game and relieved in 7 more over 11 IP – 19 H, 3 HR, 5 BB, 12 K: 10.64 ERA, 2.18 WHIP)
Needless to say, Sergio needs a leeeeetle bit more seasoning before talking about him helping the ML team this year. I would guess he’ll start the year in AA again, and hopefully, if he does well, he’ll be promoted to AAA, even if we have to DFA/release one of the myriad el-crappo AAA lifers we have hanging around. Because his arm/shoulder haven’t been injured, I have at least SOME hope that he will be able to do well this year.
And hopefully, he won’t be traded away for yet some more crappy middle relievers.

was getting ready to ask you about Sergio, but yes, lisa i agree with you on your take of him. He appears to me that he has some promise and maybe can help us in the not to far future. Lets hope so and like you say hopefully they won!t get rid of him for some old broken down reliever.
It appears too me that perez, norris, and trinidad and maybe gervacio and possibly paulino are the only viable pitching prospects that may can help the stros in the next year or two. I really don!t know that much about the new draftees, but it would probably be at least 3-4 years before they will be ready.
i HOPE that lyles and seaton are all that – but those guys are 18 freaking years old. that’s it. the number of pitchers who were FULLY major league ready and succeeded at age 19 are very very few, and in fact, doc gooden is the last one who did that i can think of.
the last thing we should do is make 18 year old kids face ML hitters. might as well make ME pitch to ML hitters.
i wouldn’t care if it was september and we were 20 games out and they just were called up for a taste, or something, as it wouldn’t count against arb years or options.
but hs kids are sure as heck not prepared to throw the number of innings that even minor leaguers have to throw every year and they need to at least get used to that.
i would be VERY happy if they were ready in 2012 – that is just 3 years in the minors, and there are very very few pitchers who are ML ready at age 20-21; jeremy bonderman and scott kazmir are the last 2 i can think of

Yes, baseball is a cultural value. And, an ethical one. If you don’t count nine out of ten owners . . .
There are rules, however:
1) Accept the award by posting it on your blog along with the name of the person that has granted the award and a link to his/her blog. (You can get it from my old-time radio blog, which was given the same honour . . . )
2) Pass the award to another five blogs that are worthy of this acknowledgement, remembering to contact each of them to let them know they have been selected for this award.

Lisa i think ur crazy and you dont really know what ur talking about…Not only is Sergio going to AAA to start the year dont be surprised to see him in the show to far from the begining of the season…Sergio has been working hard all off season and hes doing the thing this year…so get ur facts right before u type….And another thing that catcher they drafted before sergio now that was a waste of a pick…
you are saying that sergio perez is so incredible that he will essentially skip both AA and AAA and be a ML starter this very year after losing most of last year to injuries.
based on what information/stats?
you have ANY idea how few ML starters were actually able to do that and succeed?
yes, max sapp looked to be a total bust even BEFORE he had his brain infection. As was ralph henriquez the year before
and by the way, please do not use any of George Carlin’s infamous 7 words when you post comments on my site. thank you.
Theres one thing you are forgetting Lisa, and thats that he started last year in double A. And if he wasnt going to be in at least AAA why would they invite him to big league camp even after all his injuries last year. I’ll tell you why its called talent Lisa…Thats why….Im glad you dont know much because if Sergio were to listen to you he would be in single A his whole carrer.
they invite all KINDS of guys to ST who are most certainly not going to make the big club. for example, tommy manzella last year. for example, jason castro is going to ST and there is NO freaking way he makes the team.
how many guys do you think are promoted to AAA after only 27 innings at AA? maybe i should ask – how many guys do you think are promoted to AAA after only 27 innings at AA (because they were injured most of the year) and do well?
i would be delirious with joy if sergio were to do great at AAA without AA time. you can’t possibly think i want him to suck, do you?
but even roy oswalt threw 129 innings at AA before being promoted to AAA
and remember, they using up a lot of spots at AAA for the russ ortizes of the baseball world. i would guess sergio starts the year at AA and then, hopefully the AAAA washouts will be off the AAA team and sergio will haved a spot if promoted.
but i am hope HOPING he is eventually going to be a ML starter and i sure as heck don’t want to screw him up sitting on a bench waiting for middle relief every now and then. and he has a much better chance to actually be a ML starter (as opposed to chris sampson) because the Organization WANTS him to be a starter, unlike sampson
lisa i got to say i agree with you on this one, Maybe but just maybe you might have a point. I hear Sergio is batteling a little flu right now as we speak but he is still going to pratice every day and hes not complaining like some other guys would. Oh and i heard oswalt is a jerk and true dushbag, wats up with him making the rookies pay in their bunting challenge last year in ST, Man what an ass hole, I hope his old self gets injured. What do you think about David “Bud” Norris chances of making the team this year, He is sergio’s roommate you think he has a shot as a reliver to make the club?
i think all the pitchers do the bunting challenge and honestly, i don’t think oswalt is assholic for making the rooks participate. it would be assholish to make them pay for everybody
as for bud norris making the team as a reliever – well, his last year at AA wasn’t particularly good and he’s never pitched at AAA. basically, i do NOT want young starters who haven’t thrown many minor league games sitting on the bench in the majors – after all, norris would be the LAST guy to get any innings. like they messed with chris sampson a couple years back.
unless they have decided that they will refuse to let him start and he IS going to be a reliever, i would prefer that he start in the minors.
