12/07: The Story Of Roger Clemens And The Astros Fans

Romance, my mother said, is when you have the illusion that you will have all of the good and it won’t take any work.

Marriage, my mother said, is when you have the reality that sometimes there will be some good and it will take a lot of work from both of you.

Here is my story about the romance, marriage and divorce of Roger Clemens and Houston, Texas.

Pretty much hits the nail on the head. Solid article. -Lee

    Sorry for the spam but:
    Boycott the Astros:
I’m pruposing fans don’t buy tickets or go to the Sox and Yank series here at Minute Maid. The Astors are putting those teams on a pedestal by charging 50% to 145% over already raised ticket prices.

  3. [...] piece in The Hardball Times written by Lisa Gray who writes The Astros Dugout. I disagree with some of the the conclusions I think she’s heading toward at the end, but she [...]

    i’m with you joel
i’m already SERIOUSLY opposed to interleague at all, and this is an outrage.
you know they were originally going to use this for marketing purposes, until ed wade got rid of all the players the fans hated and got miguel te-roider…

  5. What? They’re actually going to to charge a different price for Sox and Yankees? That’s disgusting.

  6. Mark says:

    Kevin–
Yeah, there going to charge a lot more for the Red Sox and Yankees. A lot of teams around the league are already doing it. They’re calling it premium pricing.
I don’t care about seeing the Yankees or Red Sox anyway, so I won’t be going to any of those games.
I’m so disgusted with the Astros that I’m not going to opening day. It’ll be the first time in many years that I haven’t been there, but I don’t see the point in paying extra (scalper) money to get a decent seat and paying more to park.

  7. Austin says:

Premium pricing!? lol…that’s amazing. I don’t think that you can call ANY Astros game premium anymore. There’s nothing about this team that says premium. Why would I want to pay 50% higher than regular ticket price to watch my boys get smacked around like a bunch of high school softball players? I’m going to bed. Call me when it’s 2009.

  8. Steve Schramm says:

Aw, y’all sure are funny. You say that now, but if the stros come together better than you think, put up runs, pitch well enough and are leading the NL Central…and then Pettitte or Rogah come to pitch, well…
I know what you’re saying, and I agree, interleague sucks and the pricing is unacceptable — I certainly won’t be there. But I don’t expect there will be empty seats, anyway.

  9. Joel B. says:

yeah i doubt we can pull it off but if we can even make a little blip in the national media about it it would be worth the effort.
i’m still going to make a few games like every year but not those, as much as i wanted too.

  10. Mark says:

    Steve–
Don’t misunderstand. I’ll still go to plenty of games, just as I have in the past when the team was horrible. I just won’t mess around with opening day or the “premium” games.
I’d rather go to weeknight games anyway.

Well, at least the Mariners (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/mariners/2004081541_maritickets19.html) are doing it, too, although they’re charging only $3 more.
“It’s sort of the direction that sports pricing is headed,” Rebecca Hale, a director of public information with the ballclub, said Tuesday. “It’s like the airlines, hotel prices, the opera and the symphony, where you pay more for something that everyone wants the most.”
By the way, the Yankees field box pricing for a single day is comparable to the Astros’ Mini-plan for bleachers seats, excuse me, View Deck seats.

  12. Lisa Gray says:

    sigh
it’s like this – the owners luuuuvvvv to spin that ticket prices are ONLY caused by high player salaries. it is not merely a lie, it’s a damned lie. if it were in fact true, then prices for games to teams like the pirates and marlins would be dirt cheap and they are not.
the “premium pricing” thing started like 5 years ago and unfortunately it is here to stay.
my mother and her friends who have season tickets are planning to sell their seats for mucho $$$ to the redsox and yankee fans who will fly in to see the teams, just as all the cubs fans do.
and i personally am planning a boycott of those games. i was really outraged that they were going to try to sell tickets by saying – and look, you can see the yankees and redsox beat up on our team isn’t that WONderful???
i think drayton burned his bridges with andy and rogah is gonna have to go thru heck to clear his name, if he even can…
    - as for me, i sure would LUUUUVVVVV to hear a good lawyer cross-examine mcnamee. but you best believe the feds ain’t gonna let THAT happen…

  13. Kris says:

We won’t be at these “primo” games either and we’re getting more & more disgusted with the high costs of being a MLB fan

Your comment about the team getting smacked around like a a bunch of HS softball players …
hey come on now, both my daughters played HS & travel team softball and the oldest through college. Some of their teams (esp the college team) could likely OUThit, OUTplay and OUThustle the Astros.
I recommend going to some of your local HS softball & baseball games. Rice baseball and UH softball is always a good bet too
