6/27/07: It’s Tombstone Time On A Platter

On a day when Woody actually pitches a decent game – 3 runs in 6 IP with6 H, 1 walk and NO HOMERS, and Chad Qualls and Dan Wheeler both pitch 2 beautiful, sharp scoreless innings, and Miller gets his one lefty out, Borkowski, who had a 3.10 ERA just 10 days ago, can’t get a single out, giving up a double, an IBB and a 3 run game winning homer to Damian Freaking Miller – as bad as Lidge giving up a game winner to Scott Podsednik -and my Stros lose to Astros killer Dave Bush and we get swept. And let me not forget that Mo Ensberg, Mr Glove, is the one whose error lost the game for Woody.

So
These old songs are goin through my head…†

They asked me how I knew
My baseball team was through
Oh, I of course replied
We’re 32 and 45, it cannot be denied

They said someday you’ll find
Astros fans must be blind
Oh, if your team seems on fire
You must realize
Smoke’s got in your eyes

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my Stros
Yet today the season has flown away
Cuz they blew too many games

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I can not hide
Oh, so I smile and say
When a bullpen dies
Gives up waaaayyy too many flies
Smoke gets in your eyes

(apologies Jerome Kern)

and let me not forget:

Gloom laden scores of games are falling, it’s Tombstone Time
Out of the Box Stros fans are calling, ’tis Tombstone Time

When other teams bigger numbers mark the end of games
I hear you, my friends, it’s Tombstone Time

Deepening shadows gather sorrow as games are lost
Fingers of stone will soon surrender the losing run
I count the moments, Drayton, till you see the cost
The Stros are, at last at Tombstone Time

Deep in the Box the hits could thrill me like days of old
Lighting the spark of wins that fills me with dreams untold
Each day I pray for the time that you want that too
So there would be no more Tombstone Time

(apologies Ram Buck)

  1. David Hannes says:

Well, y’all will get to see Craig Biggio’s 3,000 hit probably.
Well, how’s Round Rock looking…um, oh, that’s right…well, maybe former Wisconsinites Ron Dayne and Ahman Green will make the football season more fun.

  2. Lisa Gray says:

yeh, i’m so into biggio’s 3000th hit – it is so important to our season
and i am NOT into football
well, you understand how i feel about having phil as a manager and a team that sux

    “Well, y

  4. Lisa Gray says:

i think david was teasing me
and yeh, watching this team IS painful
and yeh, i DID notice the rogah gave up 4 ER over 6 IP and his team scored zero.
    i WAS gonna gloat…

  5. Andrew says:

ESPN’s coverage of Clemens today was particularly nauseating. As far as I’m concerned, he won’t be catching Warren Spahn at 363 unless he pitches another two years, maybe three if he’s really unlucky.
I kinda feel for Woody though. One of his few good starts, and the team can’t break the tie. Tough luck. But hey, he’s not alone!
So how about that Mark Buehrle? He’d look pretty good in an Astros uniform, perhaps. I get the feeling that our big free agent signing for 2008 will be Jason Kendall, though. Just a hunch.

  6. Andrew says:

If Towles was a year or two older I’d suggest bringing him up for 2008.
As it stands right now, the team will probably pursue a stop-gap solution at catcher. Hopefully that doesn’t mean convincing Ausmus to play one more year.
And hopefully Gimenez gets back healthy in time for next season.

  7. Lisa Gray says:

looks like buehrle is re-signing with the sox.
as for kendall, well, he’s pretty strictly a singles hitter and he GIDP a LOT more than brad ausmus and looking at his numbers, well, he doesn’t seem to be good for much

  8. Rosie Salinas says:

Sure seems as if no one has anything to say this morning.
I saw last night’s game – Biggio did it – Lee slams – It was GOOD.
