7/3/12: Ex-Stro Drew Sutton Hits Walk Off To Beat The Team That Didn’t Want Him

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

At least the Astros HIT the ball tonight – and against AJ Burnett, too. Everone in the lineup, including Lucas Harrell, who went 2 fer 3 (2 bunt hits) except Julio Daniel Martinez got at least 1 hit.

But the Astros lost anyway.

Trouble is that there is too much suckage in the bullpen. Harrell was pulled with bases loaded no outs, ahead 6-2 in the 6th, Froddy came in and let all 3 runs score. Froddy is simply terrible – needs to go on the DL, go to AAA, SOMETHING. But he sure isn’t the right guy to bring in in a high leverage situation. Then again, since Wilton Lopez is out, there really isn’t ANY guy to bring in in a high leverage situation.

Brandon Lyon gave up the go-ahead 2 run homer in the 7th. He’s looked awful too and the pitch that Garrett Jones hit out was right down the middle.

Top of the 9th, Lowrie walked, then Jason Castro hit a double into the RF corner to tie the game and hand Joel Hanrahan his 3rd BS, but Wesley Wright hung a curve to Drew Sutton and it would have been an out on the Hill – or a triple – but in Pittsburgh, it left the park and there you go.

Pittsburgh sent down former highly pimped tradee Jose Tabata and they’re keeping Drew Sutton. Not that I blame them, but he’d better hit against teams other than the Astros. Not sure why the Rays DFAd him earlier this year, because he was hitting better than most guys on that team, but hey, it’s their loss.

Oh yeah – speaking of Ex-Stros, Roy Oswalt pitched the worst game of his major league career tonight – 11 runs/9 ER – 13 hits, 4 BB, 3 HR over 4.2 IP – and this to the White Sox, too.

Also Michael Bourn has a better shot to get voted to the ASG now that Chipper Jones was selected to replaced Matt Kemp. Wonder if he’s gonna pull a Cal Ripken – it would be very kewl. Chipper should get elected first ballot seeing as how he’s been declared as A Clean Guy based on his not hitting too many home runs. No that can’t be it because Jim Thome hit too many home runs too. No ends of prejudice out there…

And happy 4th of July all yall. Going to have the TV on – checking it over the sound of music pumping, kids laughing, BBQ sizzling. Then we all takin the kidz downtown to watch the fireworks. No matter how old and wiseass they get, they still love the fireworks as much as we do. Fireworks ROOL. Let freedom ring.

8/8/11: Wandy Pitches 6 Scoreless, JD Martinez Homers Again And Astro Beat Diamondbacks

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

The Astros batted around in the FIRST inning. Note that for once, there was no Clank. JB Shuck led off – glad to see him and not Jason EFF Michaels out there, Altuve batted second, Nourgeois 3rd (you EVER think you’d see him in the 4 hole???!!!) and JD Martinez hit cleanup.

Started out great – Shuck GO to Cody Rasmus – remember him? He’s one of those AAAA guys who gets 20-40 games every year in the majors for some team and he was with the Astros in 07, signed as a 6 year minor league FA – his 10th year in pro ball – and was the Round Rock AAA player of the year. Joe McEwing, a guy just like him, had been the AAA player of the year in 06 and it was right then that I KNEW that the Astros minor league system was in much MUCH deeper doodoo than I had realized, although I had been quite aware that it was NOT exactly the 01 system.

,Where was I? Oh yeah, 1 out, then Altuve doubled down the LF line (he’s STILL hitting over .300), then JD hit a changeup off the END of his bat which went over the RF wall into the bullpen.  Whoa. 4 run lead.

Then Matt Downs grounded out – he had a bad game with the bat and he made 2 MAJOR baserunning mistakes – and I mean – there’s no excuse for THOSE mistakes, he didn’t just come up from the minors (more later), then Paredes and Barmes singled, Corporan doubled them home, Wandy blooped a single into left !!!!! But Shuck made the 3ed out.

5 run lead!!!

Wandy, we know, is pitching in spite of a sore shoulder, and he looked a little stiff out there – came out throwing FB – got a single, popup. Then he started throwing chngeups and curves, couldn’t get em in the zone, but fortunately Upton got himself out on a popup, Wandy gave up a “hit” to Chris Young, who hit what should have been an easy line drive to the left of Paredes, who let it clank off his glove (CJ would have caught holy heck if it had been him) and everyone was safe. Wandyf walked the next guy – Corporan wasn’t getting him any borderline calls on the outside black, and the curveball asn’t curving much. Fortunately, the next hitter just got on top of a curve in the zone and grounded out. 25 pitches – I was afraid he was picking up where Happ-less left off…

Second inning, Altuve singles, Bourgeois lined out to third – a tougher play than the one Paredes didn’t make, then Altuve stole second without a throw, JD singled to shallow right after a 9 pitch AB – something the Astros are PARTICULARLY bad at – not the singling, the extending ABs by fouling off pitches. Downs doubled down the LF line scoring Altuve. JD stopped at third – not sure if even Bourn could have scored from first on THAT one unless he had a good lead, and JD didn’t.  Paredes hit a hard GB to second and JD couldn’t score.

Then – I could hardly believe this – Barmes hits a high chopper up the middle – JD is already breaking for home – the SS grabs the ball, fires to first to try to get Barmes, and STUPIDLY, Downs didn’t stop at second – and remember, this is NOT a guy who is fast, is chugging home, the first baseman has an EASY throw to the catcher and Downs is a dead duck by 15-20 feet. I can’t tell if Clark was waving him home or if he ran through a stop sign, but all I can say is – you gotta be freaking kidding me!!! This is similar to the boneheaded baserunning thingy that Barmes did the game before.

Fortunately, we’re ahead 7-0.

Wandy is having the same problems with control – w walks, 2 K, 1 groundout, no runs, 27 pitches.

Hudson manages to get through the 3rd inning giving up only a single to JB. NOW he singles…

Wandy gets 2 groundouts, 1 walk and a popup on 18 pitches. STILL struggling to get pitches where he wants em.

4th inning – Hudson out, llefty ex-Pirate Zach Duke in for long relief. Looks like the old Zach Duke – 3 groundouts and a GB single. Didn’t know he wasn’t starting any more. Wandy has decided to slow down the ol FB a couple MPH (or maybe he DIDN’T decide to) and from then on, whatever DID come in the zone, the couldn’t do anything with – a couple of lazy FB and routine grounders. He left after 6 leading 7-0/105 pitches, 2 hits, 4 walks. Didn’t like the walks, but better than grooving one and giving up something awful like a RBI XBH.

Another Astros baserunning screwup – top of the 6th – GO, single, WP, FO, walk, Downs singles, bases loaded 2 outs. Paredes singles to SHALLOW left, men on second and third score, LF throws ball home from SHALLOW left, Downs tries to advance to third on the throw.

Of course he’s out by 30 feet – the catcher would have had to throw the ball back into LF for Downs to not have been caught off base. I don’t know if this is Downs doing his own thing or obeying the coaches, but this is a SLOW guy who has no business trying to go to third on a ball hit to SHALLOW left.

Fortunately, we’re ahead by 9 runs, but it isn’t a good idea to have baserunners doing stupid stuff. And Downs at first base makes Clank look like a Gold Glover – he couldn’t even get to an easy popup in foul ground.

sigh

Fulchino pitches the 7th and 8th, giving up only a solo homer to Chris Young and Wesley Wright mopped up the 9th, getting a groundout, a single and a GIDP.

We’re fast approaching 40 wins – but not to fear, even the Pirates, in spite of their 10 game losing streak, are far FAR ahead and not threatening to grab last place. It will be FUN to see what Crane will do next year if the ol cheapskate finds out that he gets first pick and will be expected to pick the best prospect available who will most likely be represented by Boras. Will he pull a Padres and pick a piece of crap like Matt Bush, making an ass of himself complaining about “signability” to excuse having to pay only 3 million for nothing instead of more million for something?

Tonight, it’s Jordan Lyles, trying to see if he can do the unthinkable and win again – and we’re facing Jason Marquis, who was traded from the Nats. The Dbax, by the way, not only gave the Nats some good prospects, but paid ALL of Marquis’ remaining salary…

Whatever Will The 2011 Astros Do For A LOOGY?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

I was going to write about the battle for the 5th starter between Ryan Rowland-Smith, Nelson Figueroa, Jordan Lyles and, uh, all the guys who Ed Wade talked about as starters to scare Bud Norris into pitching well – like Fernando Abad, Wilton Lopez (oh PLEEEZE) and whoever he scrounged from other Organizations’ scrap heaps.

But we all know that Figgy has been frequently bounced between minors/starting/relieving and the probability that he will actually start 33 games is miniscule, but I would be very surprised if he didn’t start ANY. He’d be wasted as a LOOGY. And we all know that Jordan Lyles will “require” minor league AAA work no matter HOW he pitches until the super 2 deadline has passed – the guy is 20 and I promise that the Organization would prefer 1 more year of underpayment at age 26 in case Lyles turns out to be any good at getting ML hitters out. And like Figgy, lefty Ryan Rowland-Smith has bounced back and forth between minors/starting/relieving. Because he actually CAN start, has had success as a starter and was hurt last year when he uck-sayed, I would guess that if he doesn’t make the rotation as the 4th or 5th man, he’s be another long reliever/spot starter, like Figgy.

Unless he completely uck-says in ST, in which case, he will most liekly end up in AAA with Lyles and Arguello.

Hmmmmmm

Lefty.

Yeah, we gotta talk about that. As we all know, it is critical to have a lefty reliever because all rightys except closers can’t get leftys out. So, let’s see which lefty pitchers are on the Astros 40 man and NRI list: I mean, besides Wandy and Happ:

Fernando Abad, age 25, who spent winter ball as a starter – and last year, threw 19 innings over 22 games with a 2.84 ERA/1.00 WHIP – and an incredibly low 6.6 H/9 and 5.7 K/9. I promise that that hits/9 will not remain THAT low – his minor league totals are 9.3/9. And yeah, he has over 9 K/9 IP as well. His maximum number of innings pitched/year is 82, and although he IS 25, and is supposedly above the “cutoff” age, he DID pitch winter ball and I seriously doubt he is anywheres near ready to throw 200 innings this season. Which means it is far more sensible to use him as a LOOGY or long reliever. I can’t find freely/easily available minor league splits, but I would guess that he has good success against leftys – the real question is – what are his numbers vs rightys, as this is more important for deciding whether or not he should be facing RHB. I am not examining his 19 ML innings for the simple reason that the sample size is too small.

NRI – Doug Arguello, age 26. Over 09 and 10, threw 202 excellent innings at AA (by the way, he’s the guy the Organization studiously ignored in their eagerness to pimp Lyles in spite of Arguello actually pitching better, but I digress) as a starter: Last year, started 22 games over 128 IP with a 2.85 ERA/1.31 WHIP: 8.5 H/9, 7.5 K/9; 0.3 homers/9 (throughout his minor league career, he’s always been stingy with homers) and 3.3 BB/9. I don’t care if he is too old to fit into the category of “prospect” and I don’t care if he IS 26, sometimes leftys take a while to put it together and good lefty starters don’t grow on trees and I hopehopeHOPE that Ed Wade isn’t crazy enough to waste this guy on LOOGY hood. He SHOULD start at AAA (just like Lyles, but I digress…)

NRI: Gustavo Chacin, age 30. Last year, used mostly as a mopup guy in blowout games we were already losing - 38.1 IP over 44 games. Looking at just the game logs, it appears he was used as a LOOGY in 12 games, mostly in late August/September. His splits are not significant, although like pretty much every lefty, he gives up a couple more homers to righty batters. He had over a .300 BAA vs both. Even Wesley Wright is better than this.

Sergio Escalona, age 26: You’ll NEVAH guess who drafted him in the first place. Oh. You guessed it was Ed Wade with the Phillies. You so smart. The Phils DFA’d him in Jan 11 and Ed Wade picked him up in trade for some A-ball second baseman (now watch that guy go on to be good). He’s very similar to Abad – has 254 minor league innings pitched with a 3.86 ERA/1.42 WHIP: 7.9 H/9, 3.8 BB/9 and 9.1 K/9. Like Abad, he spent most of 2010 at AA. Like Abad, he has some ML experience (2009) – threw 13.2 innings over 14 IP: 4.61 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 7.9 H/9 and 6.6 K/9. I don’t know why he was sent to AA last year instead of AAA – yeah, he had 19 not good innings at AAA in 2009, but he still had some ML experience. He had pitched well in his 24 innings at AA in 2008. Again, I have no idea how he does vs RHP, but as Ed Wade isn’t talking him up as a sterter in waiting, I would guess that he is purely LOOGY material.

NRI: Pat Urckfitz, age 22: This is someone I never heard of – believe it or not, he’s an undrafted FA out of junior college who signed with the Astros in 2008. He was used as a reliever in his first 2 years, and spent last year at Lancaster A+ ball (their ballpark, remember, is hitteriffic beyond belief – think of Coors pre-humidor). He started 12 games and relieved in 23 over 104.2 IP. His numbers at hitters’ heaven were absolutely outstanding: ERA 4.13/1.40 WHIP with 9.9 H/9, 8.9 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and – get this - only 0.8 home runs/9 IP. At LANCASTER, mind you. Which has kicked the living heck out of all of the Astros hyped prospects since Lancaster became the Astros A+ ball club 3 years ago (and no, Jordan Lyles was not ever sent there – he was sent straight to AA from A-ball – wonder why….) He threw only 5 (good) innings at AA last year, but I am seriously impressed. I doubt he’d make the ML team, but putting up those numbers at LANCASTER? I’m impressed.

And you know, there have been more than a few undrafted guys (I mean from USA/Puerto Rico) who have made it to the majors and have even done very well – think Dan Wheeler.

Starting now, I’m gonna follow this guy’s numbers. You know me, always rooting for the underdogs. Hopefully, he’ll kill AA and then AAA pitching and make it to the bigs. As an Astro, I mean.

Wesley Wright: age 26 – hard to believe he’s been an Astro for 3 years. He spent most of 2010 in the minors as a starter, throwing 14 games over 69 IP (almost 5 IP/GS) – not, uh, great. He had a 3.13 ERA.274 BAA vs leftys and a 5.40 ERA/.285 BAA vs rightys. As he did in the majors, he walked a good 4 batters/9 IP (both leftys and rightys), interestingly enough, struck out rightys at a higher rate (6.5 vs 4.8) BUT gave up homers to rightys at a significantly higher rate, just as he did in the majors.

In the majors, he really hasn’t strictly been used as a LOOGY, especially last year (and really I don’t have the time to go and re-calculate all the numbers omitting last year) and here are his career ML numbers:

vs RHB: 382 PA: .512 SLGA; .874 OPSA; 50 BB: 74 K/382 PA – sorry BBref doesn’t do IP – 18 2B; 21 HR/382 PA – also a .279 BA on balls in play

vs LHB: .384 SLGA/.734 OPSA over 200 PA: 22 BB, 59 K/220 PA; 14 2B, 2 HR – .359 BA on BIP

- basically, he walks more rightys, gives up LOTS more homers to rightys (source of his real trouble), strikes out more/walks fewer leftys, but gives up more doubles but significantly fewer homers.

Looks like LOOGY to me, unless Ed Wade plans to waste Wesley’s life as an unsuccessful AAA starter.

So, in conclusion, I would guess that Abad has the best chance of being the Designated LOOGY, with the other lefty reliever spot a tossup between Escalona and Wesley Wright, depending on how they do at ST.

9/10/10: Astros Pitch Batting Practice To Reds On Saturday, But Chris Johnson Provides Insurance Run And Astros Win Today

Sunday, September 19th, 2010

What can I possibly say about Saturday’s game except – thank you Carlos Lee, for hitting a homer early on so we didn’t get shut out.

Lessee – Figgy is good n lousy and last night, lousy Figgy showed up. He did indeed get a few unearned runs – CJ scooped up a ball, double pumped and didn’t get the out. But Figgy threw a whole lot of pitches in the dirt and Castro didn’t block 2 of them and one of em led to a run. And Jim Edmonds hit a homer that went 316′ – clanged offn the LF foul pole a couple feet north of the yellow line, and all I can say is – too bad no chicken sandwich for that one.

But the opposite field homer to Jay Bruce into the RF bullpen was definitely no cheapo, and he was very lucky to get away with only 3 ER in 4.1 IP because he really wasn’t fooling anyone.

And, by the way, Pence needs to remember to hit the cutoff man. He fielded Rolen’s RBI single with men on first and third. Instead of hitting the cutoff man, he tried to throw out Votto, who is a GOOD runner at third, and waaaaayyy overthrew the ball, which went about 10′ to CJ’s right – no way he could get it AND tag out Votto – and Sanchez, playing short, was the cutoff guy and he looked as if he was in fact expecting the throw – which would have kept Rolen at first, not that it ended up mattering, but this has been a habit of Pence this year.

With only a 4 run lead, I was very surprised to see Mills send in Henry Villar, who, if yall remember, just finished AA and threw 102 innings with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP – actually, i was very surprised that he was promoted at all, but hey, with this Organization, youneverknow.

But anyway, his outing consisted of 2 straight walks, a single, a balk, a sac-fly and a HBP. 2 runs, no outs. It wasn’t more because Chacin came in, faced a RIGHTY (goodness gracious!!!) and bailed his butt out.

Good news is that Wesley Wright FINALLY got to pitch after sitting for over 2 weeks and he got 4 straight outs with 3 Ks – and then he naturally got pulled for a righty. Paulino followed, immediately gave up a homer to Drew Stubbs which sailed through the first archway in left, but then got the next 5 outs.

Del Rosario, the guy we picked up on waivers from the Reds, immediately showed why the Reds didn’t want him no mo – groundout, single, single, K, double, single, groundout – and 2 runs.

Good news is that Brian Esposito, age 31, finally got his first ML PA – got 2 of em, actually, a groundout and a flyout to the warning track in right – but hey, a ML AB after 10 years is a ML AB. He’s one of zillions of catchers who are great at catching but can’t hit a lick – JD said that Roy-O said he really liked throwing to him this spring. Blowouts are good for stuff like this.

Today is noteable for this being Michael Bourn’s 28th straight day he has reached base. Which is teh kewl.

The Astros scored 3 runs off Travis Wood, and then CJ homered off reliever Jordan Smith, which turned out to be very fortunate because Matt Lindstrom was massive suckage again today – he got 2 popflies to right, gave up a double to Joey Votto off the LF bullpen wall – WHY would anyone throw a FB right down the middle of the plate to the NL MVP (and yes he SHOULD be)???!!! and he gives up an RBI single on a low inside FB which goes right up the middle, then ANOTHER FB right down the middle – seriously, groin high, mid plate and Ramon Hernandez hits it into the Crawford Boxes.

sigh

Melancon gets the final out then Brandon Lyon does his usual get 2 outs, then make it, uh, interesting, giving up 2 singles before getting Joey Votto to pop out – and yes I WAS surprised that Mills didn’t pull Lyon and send in Abad, who was already warmed.

youneverknow.

2 week road trip time – 4 games in DC, then 3 games in Pittsburgh, day off, then 3 games at the GAB (my Gawd, I almost wrote Riverfront), then a day off, then we finish off the season with a 3 day series with the C*bs.

8/8/10: Wesley Has The Wrong Stuff And Brewers Pound Him

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Major league hitters do what is called “adjust.” Last week, Wesley Wright beat the Brewers by throwing high strikes. Oh – and by not throwing lots of pitches outside the strike zone.

Today, with Balking Bob behind HP, Wesley couldn’t get ANY borderline strikes – high, low, inside, outside – and he didn’t help himself by throwing even more pitches waaaayyy out of the zone. (Of course, Gallardo got ALL of the borderline pitches called as strikes. I absolutely HATE it when umps play favorites like this. You disbelieve me, got look at Chris Johnson’s AB in the 6th – he was called out on 3 pitches, ALL of which were called balls for Astros pitchers. I am awaiting our new robot strike calling overlords. Along with replay cameras – an umpire in the booth to immediately overrule any calls which are incorrect.)

Mills mercifully pulled him with 1 out in the second after Wesley had walked Prince and Braun on 8 straight pitches (like I said about NO borderline strikes), then an IF popup, then new CF Lorenzo Cain hit a bullet juuuuust over the 3B bag (too bad ol Balkin Bob wasn’t at third to eff THAT one up, too). Naturally, Figueroa let THAT run score, too. (If Melvin/Macha have any sense, they won’t reinstate Carlos Gomez in center after he gets off the DL – however, most Organizations have a problem if a rookie comes up and significantly outplays the veteran – see Edwin Maysonet…)

Was it just last month that the Astros had the best ERA in the majors? Flukes, you know.

At the end of top of the second, it was Astros 2, Crew 8.

Could someone PLEASE explain to me why, no matter the situation, Pedro Suckage Feliz is ALWAYS the first PH sent in. Is it Mills’ firm belief that the absolute worst hitter should ALWAYS pinch hit at the first opportunity? I don’t get it – not even COOPER was that crazy. Naturally, Feliz was sent up to hit with 2 on 1 out in the bottom of the second, and naturally, he grounded out weakly to third, as usual.

Astros completely threw in the towel after Chacin gave up a 3 run homer in the 4th to make it 11-4. Get this:

Brett Wallace got a single and scored in. But he also made a rookie mistake – batting in back of Clank, who was walked on 4 straight pitches, he swung at 3 straight pitches, ALL out of the zone. He’ll learn. He was punished by being pulled after the inning was over and Clank was installed at first. Yeah, that’ll REALLY learn him good. I understand pulling a guy for dogging it – but being overeager with the bat? He didn’t ignore a bunt sign or anything. Good grief.

After that, I was SOOO disgusted that I went out in the backyard with Husband to eat BBQ and didn’t even bother to turn up the sound.

I will tell you that Clank didn’t make an error. I will tell you that CJ turned a nice DP and didn’t miss any. I will tell you that Angel Sanchez fielded a ball, made a throw that pulled Wallace offn the bag and the “infield hit” scored a run. Also Chris Johnson reached base for the 21st consecutive time today – he went 1 fer 4 with a run scored and he’s still batting 7th – we wouldn’t want him – like, you know – driving in runs or anything.

You don’t wanna hear how many men got left on base.

And Jeff Fulchino needed only 20 pitches to pitch 2 innings – no hits, no walks, no HBP. Let’s hope his DL stint really DID do him some good. Byrdak pitched a scoreless with a walk and Lopez managed to escape a 2 hit inning without runs scoring.

Wesley Has The Wright Stuff For His First W As A Starter And Michaels Slams Home The Winning Runs

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Wesley pitched 4 perfect innings to start off the game, then Braun broke up the nono with a clean single to start off the 5th. Didn’t bother Wes a bit, he just got the next hitters out 1,2,3.

He got the first out to start the 6th, then Randy Wolf doubled over the 1B bag (they didn’t show the replay because of Patti Smith yapping about the wives gala – the fans appeared to think it was foul, but youneverknow) and a fan grabbed the ball, or Wolf might could have ended up on 3rd. Weeks flew out, then Hart hit a Fb over the RF wall to give the Crew a 2 run lead. Wesley shrugged, went after da Prince and got him on a grounder up the middle which Keppinger got and threw to Wallace, only the 1B ump got the call wrong and called him safe.

Well, he walked Braun, then got McGehee to groundout.

Losing 2-0, he came out for the 7th, blew away Gomez and Weeks, then got Hart to pop out.

A GREAT performance. He had every pitch working really well – the FB was located well, the curve was curvin and the slider was slidin. 7 innings, 102 pitches, 70 strikes, 6 K, 1 BB, 4 H (shoulda been 3 H, as I said) and only went to a 3 ball count TWICE. Absolutely superlative. I hope to heck he isn’t replaced in the rotation by Moehler. I’m gonna hafta get a Wesley shirt to go along with my Wandy shirt the boy keeps this up.

Randy Wolf pitched really well, too. He gave up a triple to Keppinger (Edmonds can’t run or throw any more) in the first, then got Pence. He gave up a leadoff single to Sanchez in the 3rd, then Keppinger GIDP. He gave up a leadoff single to Bourn in the 6th, but Sanchez GIDP. He gave up a single to Clank in the 5th, then CJ lined out to McGehee, then

BRETT WALLACE GOT HIS FIRST ML HIT

with a single to left, but Quintero and Wesley both struck out.

Wolf was in line for a 2-0 win when Pence lined a shot off his right (glove) wrist and he had to come out immediately. Then disaster struck for the Crew – Kameron Loe and his 1.97 ERA trotted in, but Kam could NOT find the strike zone and threw 8 straight balls which were not even close (you know how they almost always give strike 1 on the 4th pitch) to load the bases.

Macha brought in  Braddock, the lefty (and a GOOD lefty) to face lefty Wallace, but Mills pulled him and sent in Jason Michaels, who sent a 2-0 pitch into the Crawford Boxes for a grand slam.

And that was the game.

Pence added another run in the 8th with a triple to the RF bullpen and trotted home when Weeks, the cutoff man, airmailed the throw to 3rd into the stands, so the umps waved Pence home.

Wilton Lopez pitched a 2 swinging K 8th and Lyon came on for the save in the 9th (Lindstrom not available – not sure why…)

And, sad to say, Chris Johnson’s 14 game hitting streak came to an end when Escobar made an absolutely incredible play on a ball in the 5.5 hole – DEEP in the hole and threw him out by 5 steps. He smashed a line drive which McGehee grabbed, then grounded out in the 8th. But he DID walk and score on the JMike granny.

We head off to Saint Looey to face Uncle and Jaime Garcia, who is being overlooked for Rookie Of The Year because of all the hoopla over Da Strasburg (and Big Hittahs Jason Heyward and Mike Stanton.) Ed Wade’s little “warrior” PetsyPoo, fresh off a contract extension (10.5 mill a year for 2 years and an option) has been designated The Ace. BAH – Like at age 29 he’s gonna keep pitching 1 run under his career ERA for the next 3 years.

Cubs Pitchers Give Up 11 Hits, But Astros Leave All But 2 On Base And Lose

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Wesley Wright wasn’t BAD, but unfortunately, although he only walked 1, gave up 8 hits over 5 innings, 4 of the runs scored, so he lost.

The real problem was that the Astros hitters (and I’m lookin at YOU, Clank, Lance, Pence!!!) didn’t drive in but 2 – Lance drove in 1 in the 1st and Pence drove in 1 in the 7th). In fact, every hitter except for Keppinger left at least 1 on base.

Bourn has picked it up, Angel Sanchez is still hitting well, Chris Johnson is still hitting well, and Jason Castro is struggling. Maybe we should move him to the 2-hole.

We face Ted Lilly tonight – sorry, I thought it was last night, instead of Silva.

And posting will be pretty sporadic this week – life is interfering with baseball and writing, sorry.

1 week left till the deadline. Haren was traded yesterday, and Oswalt is the only ace left. I have heard from multiple sources that many teams are inquiring about Myers, Pence and Bourn AND that Fast Eddie and Drayton are, to put it VERY mildly, extremely difficult to deal with. Gee, what a surprise. Sort of reminds me of the girl won’t agree to be with any man unless he looks like Brad Pitt age 30 (and has his $$$ too) or any guy who refuses to touch any female unless she looks like Beyonce (replace with your particular hottie of choice) and ends up with no one.

Wandy Throws 7 Innings of 1 Hit Ball, Beats Mike Leake’s Reds

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

It wasn’t the best I’ve seen him throw, and he gave up 2 walks and went to 8 pitch counts twice and 9 pitch count once, but he kept em off the basepaths fer SHER. He only had 2 hard hit balls – one by Hanigan to the LF bullpen (thank you Michael Bourn) and one to the Hill (thank you Michael Bourn) but the Danger in this Park (ask Roy last night or Leake today) is to left, where the Crawford Boxes beckon so invitingly.

Pence gave Wandy a 1 run lead with a solo homer to the CBoxes in the second, and that was all he needed. CJ added another solo homer with a smash above the CBoxes onto the tracks and Michael Bourn, hitting against a LEFTY!!! (YOU SEE THAT MILLSY???!!! A LEFTY!!!) drove in Castro and Jason Michaels with a double to seal the deal.

Poor Castro – he should have had another hit and an RBI, but Johnny Gomes trapped his liner to left with man on second 2 out in the 4th and sold it as a catch.

Lyons and Lindstrom came in and got em out in the 8th and 9th even though thre was no save – hey, the bullpen is teh sukc these days.

Speaking of sukc, Chris Sampson was sent down today – he still hasn’t recovered from the shoulder problem. Meanwhile, we’re trying out Fernando Abad, a 24 year old lefty. He was called up from AA, where he was a swingman – started 4 games, relieved in 10 over a total of 39.2 IP with an ERA of 2.50, Whip 1.41 and a .306 BAA. Although he gave up a lot of hits, he gave up only 6 walks/39.2 IP and 3 HR/39.2 IP – so we’ll see how he does.

He can’t be worse than Majewski/Daigle.

Can he?

Oh yeah – check out this nice article on Danny Arguello. Wonder why Jordan Lyles would merit a callup and he wouldn’t…

Anyway, we got to see Anderson Hernandez starat at SS today. Isn’t any better with the glove and he got a nice GIDP and nothing else.

By the way, Ed Maysonet came back from the DL a couple of weeks back and is hitting like crazy over the past 2 weeks. Would be nice to see him get called back up again (he spent almost the whole year on the DL – and didn’t get many ABs because of Matt Kata, who has lately returned to his normal level of suckage…)

Tomorrow, it’s lefty Wesley Wright vs lefty Ted Lilly – yes, the C*bs are back in town. Makes the beer guys happy…

Anyway, Ted Lilly is supposed to be on the trading block – and wouldn’t be real too surprised to see a lot of scouts – he always KILLZ the Astros, it seems. Even the time he gave up FIVE homers, he still won.

Hopefully, the guys will get it together for Wes tomorrow, and Millsy won’t leave him out there to throw 40 pitches in an inning. Anyway, Ted can be an example to Wes of how a very small lefty (and Lilly can’t be an inch over 5-9) can be a very successful ML pitcher.

Mills Leaves Wesley Wright In The 5th To Throw 33 Pitches

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

and give up 5 runs – thanks to a SERIOUS 2 base effup by Keppinger, who missed an easy GIDP (threw the ball away) and then to Castro, who had a passed ball (and frankly, there are too many pitches which are scored as WP which are really balls that should have been blocked) on what should have been a K for the 3rd out (and yes, I know that none of the 5 runs given up that inning were earned, but just the same,

I simply could NOT believe that Mills left poor Wesley in, when he was CLEARLY exhausted to face Aramis Ramirez – and, of course, he gave up a 3 run homer on a hanging curve.

I understand wanting to give your pitcher confidence and a W, but just the same, it is a manager’s job to know when his pitcher is so tired that he can hardly even throw the ball.

And this on a night when Wesley was spotted SEVEN runs off the usually tough Ryan Dempster. Actually, up until that horrid 5th inning, I thought that Wesley might could even throw a complete game, as he was sailing along.

I like how Andrew Cashner (a Houston boy who Drayton refused to sign because he didn’t want to pay him a decent bonus) got Berkman, Pence and Clank out on 5 pitches.

I hate to say it, but it is getting to be about time to move Berkman from the 3-hole, maybe to the 2-hole because he is basically a singles hitter/walker these days.

Chris Johnson, by the way, hit HR #2 – like 400+ feet to almost dead center. Man I hope he’s for real…

Spring Training 2010 – Astros Pitchers Report

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Yes, I know this is not exactly a staff to boast about, but at least there are plenty of middle relievers. Ed Wade is GOOD at picking up middle relievers offn the trash heap, waiver wire. He’s not so good at signing them as FA or trading for them, however. Interesting that this Organization, like the Giants, in spite of monstrous effups in the draft, has managed to develop some pitchers. And NRI does NOT mean no chance to make the team – remember Moehler and Rick White… Let’s take a look:

Fernando Abad, age 24 RH RP: signed as an undrafted FA out of the D.R. in 021 by the Astros. Started and relieved in Rookie League Greenville (a hitters’ paradise) in 07, did OK with a 4.14 ERA. Threw 76 innings in relief of 3.30 ERA ball at Lexington in 08. Last year, threw 82 innings in relief at A+ with a 4.14 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, low BB and HR and 8.4 K/9. Promoted to AA, started 3 games over 14 IP with a 3.21 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, increased to 1.9 BB/9, but 0.6 HR/9 and 8.6 K/9. Not sure if the change to starter is going to stick, but at least he seems to have some control. Of course he needs more time in the minors.
Alberto Arias, age 26, Rh RP: one of Ed Wade’s GOOD scrap heap pickups – this time from the Rox at the trade deadline in 08. He uck-sayed as a starter, but this year excelled as a 1 inning reliever until Cooper overused him and he broke in August. He spent the rest of the year on the DL, but should be ready for ST. He threw 45.2 innings over 42 games, ended with a 3.35 ERA/1.49 WHIP, 0.2 HR/9, 3.7 BB/9, 7.7 K/9. He should make the ML team – he’s out of options and would have to pass through waivers before going to AAA…
Yorman Bazardo, age 25, RH SP/RP: signed as a FA in 09 after he was released by the (surprise, surprise) Phillies, who let him go after ST. He had a great year at AAA, was the second best pitcher in the PCL behind Bud Norris (would have been nice if someone at RR besides JR Towles and Tommy Manzella had been able to hit the ball, but I digress…) but he had a very low H/9 AND, unfortunately, a very low K/9. It didn’t translate into major league success, as he exhibited poor control and mediocre stuff and he managed only 1 decent game – threw 5.2 innings against Cole Hamels and NL Champion Phillies, giving up only 2 runs. Yes, I know that every now and then, pitchers with low K rates manage to have ML success, but not combined with high H/9 and high BB/9. I seriously doubt he makes the ML team out of ST, but yeah, youneverknow.
NRI – Josh Banks, age 27, RH SP/RP: second round pick of Toronto on 02. He’s one of those guys with a high ERA and low WHIP who doesn’t walk many, but gives up too many hits. He was called up in 07, pitched 7 lousy innings. He started 08 in AAA, his 3rd year in AAA, and when he had 3 bad starts, he was released and picked up by the Padres. He had 14 starts and 3 relief appearances in 08 with a 4.75 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 9.9 H/9 IP, 1.3 HR/9. 3.4 BB/9, 4.5 K/9 over 85.1 IP (around 5.2 IP/GS). He started off 2009 badly, 3 GS, 3 in relief over 22.1 IP with a 7 something ERA – reduced walks AND Ks and increased HR. He spent the remainder of the year at AAA – did fairly well with a 3.46 ERA, 1.25 WHIP over 125 IP – lowered homers and walks, and increased K/9 to 6.8. He’s one of those guys who has minor league success but has a tough time translating it to ML success. I would guess that he’d be stashed in AAA along with Bazardo.
Tim Byrdak, age 36, LH RP: one of Ed Wade’s scrap heap pick up middle reliever success stories (see, I DO give Fast Eddie credit when credit is due) in ST 2008. He posted a 108 ERA+ over 55 innings in 08 and a 130 ERA+ over 61 IP in 09. (By the way, he is supposed to be the exact same size as Wandy – 5’11″ and 195 lb – all yall look at them next time you can, see who is larger – hint, it ain’t the Wand Man…) Last year, he had 2 BS (both L) and 9 holds. He was used quite a bit as a LOOGY, although leftys hit a little bit better against him: – .700 OPSA vs .640. But that is just year to year variation as in 08, leftys hit .469 OPS against and rightys hit 1.005 OPSA. He is certainly capable of pitching 1 full inning, even 2, and it will be interesting to see how Brad Mills uses relievers.
NRI – Gustavo Chacin, age 29, LH SP: now this one really IS 5’11″ but last I saw him, he was a HECK of a lot more than 205 lb. Anyway, he was signed out of Venezuela by the Blue Jays in 98, had a cup of coffee in 04, then pitched 205 VERY good innings in 05 with a 119 ERA+ but, um, let’s say he sure nuff didn’t repeat his excellence in 06 at the ML level. Don’t know why – maybe he was hurt, maybe he was eating too many donuts, but he spent the next couple of years bouncing between the ML club and AAA, doing lousy. After 45 execrable innings in 08 at AAA, he was either released or went on the DL. You’ll never guess which Organization he was with last year. Yeah – but at least he had a decent year at AAA – pitched well for the first time since 05 at ANY level with a 3.21 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 8.9 H/9, 0.6 HR/9, 3.2 BB/9, 5 K/9. Like some of the other guys, I would guess that he has little to no chance of making the ML team but would be AAA filler.
NRI – Roy Corcoran, age 30 RH RP: Signed as an undrafted FA by the Expos in 01. Pitched a couple of good innings in 03 and 04, but spent all of 05 and virtually all of  06 at AAA because he has a leeeeeeetle problem with control and giving up almost 5 BB/9 IP at AAA is not good. He was picked up by the Marlins as 6 year minor league FA for the 07 season, kept his ERA down, but couldn’t lower all those walks. He was signed by Seattle in 08 and, surprisingly, pitched 72 decent innings over 50 games with a 3.22 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP (his old walks problem) but only gave up 1 homer – actually, not givein up homers is definitely his strong point – his lifetime HR numbers are 0.4/9 IP. Anyway, in 09, he pitched 19 horrible innings for Seattle (walks out of control at 8.1/9 IP and Ks decreased to 2.8/9 IP, and he was released and picked up by Ed Wade. He only threw 22 innings at Round Rock and he actually DID decrease walks, but unfortunately, at the expense of increased hits. He CERTAINLY isn’t a better reliever than either Arias or Gervacio, so I would guess he gets to go back to AAA.
NRI – Casey Daigle, age 29, RH RP: AKA Jennie Finch’s husband. First round pick of the DBax in 99 – has had limited ML action because, well, let’s just say they should have picked his wife instead. He had a low ERA last year, 2.91, but a 1.54 WHIP because of a high hit and walk rate, even though he had 8.3 K/9. He appears to me to be another AAA lifer.
Evan Englebrook, age 28, RH RP: picked by the Astros in the 8th round of the 04 draft. Has moved up a level every year, having trouble with adjustint when he first moves up. He started the year at AA, taking some of the closing duties, threw 26 innings in 21 games with a 3.16 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 6.7 H/9, 0.7 HR/9, 3.2 BB/9, 5.6 K/9. He was promoted to AAA, threw just 10 innings with a 6.97 ERA, 1.69 WHIP (too many hits.) He uck-sayed in the AFL this year, so I would gues he’s AAA bound. He doesn’t appear to be remarkable in any way.
Jeff Fulchino, age 29, RH RP: One of Ed Wade’s GOOD waiver wire pickups – this time from the Royals. He threw 82 innings of 123 ERA+ ball over 61 games: 3.40 ERA, 1.18 WHIP. Walks were a little high at 3.4/9, but he kept the hits low, 7.7/9, the HR low at 0.8/9 and the Ks reasonable at 7.5/9. Hope he repeats his numbers this year – he had a .707 OPSA leftys and a .649 OPS vs rightys.
Samuel Gervacio, age 25, RH RP: signed by the Astros as an undrafted FA out of the DR in 02, called up in August and was a VERY pleasant surprise – he was great. In fact, he almost duplicated his minor league numbers which are 3.11 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 7.1 H/9, 0.7 HR/9, 3 BB/9, 11.2 K/9. In the majors, over 22 IP, Sammy had a 2.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 10.4 K/9, 3.4 BB/9 and 6.9 H/9. I hoped he would move into the setup position, but not until the more expensive Lindstrom fails, I guess. He SHOULD make the ML team, but youneverknow…
Matt Lindstrom, age RH RP – either set up or closer: click here to read my evaluation.
NRI – Chia-Jen Lo, age 24, RH RP: signed out of Taiwan 2 years ago. This year, threw 39 innings over 30 games with a 2.31 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 6.9 H/9, 0.2 HR/9, 4.6 BB/9 (uh-oh), 9 K/9. In the AzFL, he threw 10 innings over 6 games with a 3.60 ERA and a 0.9 WHIP – 7 H, 1 HR, 4 ER,  12 K, 1 BB. I expect him to be promoted to AAA.
Wilton Lopez, age 26, RH SP: picked up on waivers from the Padres by Ed Wade (and at this point, he don’t look so good, but at least he’s not someone who is expensive.) He threw 110 mediocre innings at AA – 3.90 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 10.9 H/9, 0.7 HR/9, 1.1 BB/9 (GOOD) and 5.6 K/9. Got called up to pitch a couple of starts because darn near everyone was already on the DL and SOMEbody had to do it. Let’s just call it batting practice and let it go. Not sure if he’s even going to make the AAA team. He’d BETTER NOT make the ML team.
NRI – Shane Loux, age 30, RH SP/RP: picked by the Tigers in the 2nd round of the 97 draft out of HS. Saw ML service for the horrible 02, 03 and 04 Tigers and trust me on this, he was DEFINITELY part of the problem. After another lousy year at AAA in 05 (5 something ERA, 1.49 WHIP) he was let go and the Royals signed him as a 6 year minor league FA. He was slightly worse, believe it or not. Anyway, for some reason, the Angels picked him up for the 08 season and he lowered ERA, H/9 and WHIP at AAA and also pitched 16 good relief innings in the ML. He wasn’t able to duplicate his success in 09 and his contract wasn’t renewed. Minor league totals: over 1291 innings, 4.43 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 10 H/9, 0.8 HR/9, 3 BB/9, 5.4 K/9. Not even AAA material.  Meh.
Brandon Lyon, age 30, RH RP: will setup or close. Picked by the Blue Jays in the 14th round of the 99 draft. Originally a starter, he threw 63 innings of 108 ERA+ ball in 01, then threw 62 lousy innings in relief in 02 and was sent down to AAA, started and continued to suck. Placed on waivers at the end of the year, he was picked up by the BoSox and threw 59 innings of 113 ERA+ ball in relief in 03. Which was an, um, INteresting year for him – he was part of the infamous Mike Gonzalez trade with the Pirates (he was traded back a week later) and then, after the Pirates found out he was hurt, demanded Gonzalez back PLUS Freddy Sanchez.
At the end of the year, Lyon, Casey Fossum and Jorge De La Rosa were traded to the DBax for Curt Schilling. Lyon missed the vast majority of 04 and 05 due to injury, came back in 06 and threw 69 innings of middle relief with a 3.89 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. As a 7th inning guy and setup man, he did very well in 06, throwing 74 innings with a 2.67 ERA and 1.24 WHIP.
The DBax were confident that he could replace Valverde as closer, so they traded him to the Astros for Qualls. Lyons didn’t do particularly well as closer – his ERA increased to 4.79 and his WHIP to 1.49 – he significantly increased both hits and HR/9 and by mid August, lost his closing job to Qualls. He signed a 1 year deal with the Tigers in 09 to be a setup guy and pitched well again: 78.2 innings with a 2.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP – had a career low 6.5 H/9 and a career high 3.5 BB/9, and had his usual low K rate of 6.5/9 and his usual HR/9 of 0.8. He was signed by Ed Wade, supposedly bidding against some other team, to a 3 year 15 mill deal – imagine – a setup guy is getting the same $$$ as the #1 starter. I have a feeling this is gonna be a Kaz Matsui type deal…
NRI – Gary Majewski, age 30, RH RP: Native Houstonian drafted by the White Sox in the 2nd round of the 98 draft out of HS. While still in the minors, he was traded to the Dodgers for Antonio Osuna and a bunch of minor leaguers, and was again traded that July back to the White Sox for James Baldwin. He was in AAA, picthing very well and closing when he was traded in July to the Expos/Nats for Carl Everett (yes, I’m serious.) He was called up and threw 21 innings over 16 games with a 3.86 ERA, marred by a hit rate of 12/9 IP. He had a career year in 05, throwing 96 innings with a 2.93 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. In 06, he had thrown 55 innings of 3.58 ERA, 1.34 WHIP relief innings when he was traded to the Reds for Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez. I guess he was already hurt or immediately hurt and let me say that in the m,ajors, he has uck-sayed and in the minors, has been barely mediocre – he has a low K rate for a reliever – 5.3/9 IP in his good seasons and he tends to give up too many hits – at least 10-11/9 IP, although he is not homeriffic. He spent last year at AAA, you NEVAH guess which Organization, and threw 65 innings of 4.02 ERA/1.55 WHIP ball. He never recovered from injury, looks like.
Brian Moehler, age 38, RH SP/RP: AKA El Cucaracho. Started 29 games and threw 154 innings of 77 ERA+ ball: 5.47 ERA, 1.78 WHIP. The ERA is a little better – 4.91, if you omit his 2 April starts when he was OBVIOUSLY hurt. He also had 2 bad starts at the end of the year – he was obviuosly tired, but the Astros had no one else to take the ball, so he did – increased his ERA from 4.80 to 5.47. He’s not a terrible 5th guy and he can relieve (as long as he doesn’t go more than 3 days without work and he isn’t over worked, and he can pitch long relief. He’s getting paid 3 mill – just 2 more than Wandy, our best pitcher.
Brett Myers, age RH SP/RP: I’ve already talked about the Wifebeater enough – click here to review what I wrote (stat stuff starts about halfway down)
Matt Nevarez, age 23, RH RP. Drafted by the Rangers in the 10th round of the 05 draft and traded to the Astros last August for Pudge Rodriguez. Just finished A ball – for his minor league career, he has a 2.94 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 6.4 H/9, 0.4 HR/9, 5.2!!! BB/9 and 11.3 K/9; I should not that his walk rate decreased significantly last year to 3.5/9. Hope it continues its downward trend.
Bud Norris, age 25, RH SP: picked by the Astros in the 6th round of the 06 draft out of Cal Poly: Expected to be our #3 or 4 starter this year. Was the top pitcher in the PCL before his promotion. After callup, he had 3 good starts, 1 bad start, 1 relief appearance from heck, another bad start, then 4 straight good starts to end the year. Historically, he has kept the H/9 below 9 and the K/9 around 9.4 with noce low HR rates of 0.5/9 – but he sometimes has a bit of trouble with control – his walk rate is 3.7 in the minors and was 4.0 in the majors. I hope he sticks. He looks like a tough guy out there.
Roy Oswalt, age 32, RH SP: Roy struggled with injuries, his manager and his pitching coach last year – and oh yeah, his catcher – between Pudge and Coste, that is. He threw fewer than 200 innings for the first time since 03 when he hurt his groin, but managed 29 starts and 6 IP/GS. He had his worst ERA in the majors – 4.12, but the rest of his numbers really reflected his career norms: 1.24 WHIP, 9.1 H/9, 0.9 HR/9, 2.1 BB/9. 6.8 K/9. I have NO idea how he’ll do this year – guess it depends on his back, how bad it really is, and whether or not THIS year, he has better communication with his manager and pitching coach.
Felipe Paulino, age 26, RH SP: well, last year, he was shuffled between AAA, starting and relieving until he hardly knew which way was up. I will say that once Coper was fired and he was put in the rotation and kept there, he did better – 3 starts lasting 6 innings and 3 lasting 5 and only one bad one, really. He had 3 hard luck losses – 2-0, 2-1 and 2-1. He just might could be a decent 5th guy. In the minors, he has a 4.07 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 8.1 H/9, 0.7 HR/9, 4.3 BB.9 and 8.3 K/9. I’ve seen him throw exactly ONE excellent game, but if he has a better pitching coach and knows he has a spot in the rotation, he just might could surprise me. I sure hope so.
Wandy Rodriguez, age 31, LH SP: (see the last entry) just lost his arb. Must be, um, interesting to hear the Organization brass tell exactly why you suck and aren’t worth much…
Chris Sampson, age 32, RH RP: did fantastic until the ASB when he got hurt – had 40 games, had a 2.68 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He got hurt, they let him spend a week on the DL after the ASB, he came back, or at least tried to, and he just gave up hit after hit and run after run until they FINALLY, um, sent him down and THEN he went on the DL, where he should have been. He had surgery, he’s ready for ST and he should be back in great form. Too bad the Organization was so determined that he not start…
Polin Trinidad, age 25 LH SP: split last year between AA (did awesome) and AAA: 87 IP with a 4.53 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. Career minor league stats: 3.57 ERA, 1.14 WHIP: 8.7 H/9, 1.0 HR/9, 1.9 BB/9 (HEY, control!!! What a concept!!!) and 6.9 K/9. Will be interesting to see how he does in AAA this year. His minor league numbers look incredibly better than Paulino’s – except for the Ks, that is.
Jose G. Valdez, age 27, RH RP: picked up on waivers from the Yankees – he repeated AA last year, had 38 IP with a 3.58 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP and was even worse in his 19 innings at AAA. Minor league filler – not sure why on earth he’s an NRI.
Henry Villar, age 23, RH SP/RP: undrafted FA from the DR, joined the Astros in 08. Threw 90 innings at A ball with a 2.60 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 8 H/9, 0.8 HR/9, 1.7 BB/9, 10.1 K/9. Looks good all right, but surely not ready for prime time…
Wesley Wright, age 25, LH RP: maybe I should put down LH SP, seeing as how the Organization has in mind to train him to start. He went to winter ball to learn to pitch more than 1 inning at a time and did pretty well for his first 5 starts, then he pulled something and it went kinda downhill. Wesley struggled, uh, a bit last year, got sent down to work some stuff out, ended up with a 77 ERA+ which is a  5.44 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP (ugh) due to a huge spike in hits/9 IP from 6.5 to 10.5 – and he kept his horrid walk rate or 5/9 IP. Dude gots to learn some control. Coop liked to use him as a LOOGY – trouble was that leftys hit him better than rightys – .924 OPSA vs .853. But it just might be year to year variation, as leftys hit .621 OPSA last year. Youneverknow. IF they want him to start, they’ll probably start him in AAA so he can be sure to go every 5 days. Between him and Polin Trinidad, we might could have a lefty factory underway.

Sure wish we could do as well with position players as we do with pitchers – I mean, actually having guys who seem to possibly have SOME promise…

And, by the way, I will be happy to post any of your own pics from ST and any of your own observations, if you like.
