9/29/12: In Which Dallas Keuchel Goes From Good To Bad Just Like THAT

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Dallas had had a pretty good September – 2 R/ER over 3 games/17.1 IP and even won 2 of 3. Well, tonight, he started out fine – a quick 1,2,3 out.

Next inning – oh my. Leaving fat pitches in the middle of the plate is not a good idea for pitchers, but it’s a great one for hitters and Aramis and Corey Hart both blasted out 400+ footers to dead CF. Then it was a single, walk, sac-bunt and one of those stupid popup bloops that none of the fielders can quite get (and if they do they get a web gem) for 2 more runs.

3rd inning – it didn’t get better. Single, single, another homer to Corey Hart on ANOTHER pitch RIGHT down the middle. Youda thought he’d a learnt not to do that from the previous inning.

So it’s already Crew 7 Stros nada. Then it’s a flyout and another one of those stupid bloop doubles that neither Brett Wallace nor Scott Moore, playing RF (grrrrrr) could get. And that is the end of the line for Dallas. Mercy killing, you might could say.

Then Chuckie Fick comes in and Segura hits a sure double to the gap, only Brandon Barnes goes all Michael Bourn on that ball with a superlative diving catch (the boy is making Web Gem points) and he stands up and throws out Carlos Gomez by 10 ‘ as Carlos was pretty much at home plate when the ball was caught. That was absolutely AWESOME and really made the game slightly less painful.

Kind of made up for him getting doubled off second the top half of the inning when Altuve hit a screamer to the second baseman.

4th inning, Astros get singles by Scott Moore, then Brett Wallace, but Scott Moore gets his little self picked off second – and he was NOT paying attention neither. Really lousy baserunning. Of course, Wallace gets stranded. Chuckie Fick gives up a run on a double, a WP, then an RBI single that he tried to field, which made Tyler Greene get it to late to do anything with it.

I miss a couple innings – to summarize – Mickey Storey pitches 2 scoreless, allowing 2 baserunners in both innings. Enerio Del Rosario allows a run on 2 singles, a throwing error and a sac fly. Marco Estrada mows down Astros like a hot knife cutting through butter.

I turn the game back on at 9 in time for the 9th inning. Livan Hernandez is in to mopup in a 9-0 game. Why? Masochism must be the answer. Curiously enough, we’ve only been shut out 11 times this year, don’t ask me how that’s possible. We were shut out 17 times in 05 when we won the pennant.

Anyway, Livan gets 2 flyouts and a seeing eye single. Then it’s Fernando Martinez and I figure it’s gonna be a game ending K. But no, he hits a ball over the CF fence to bust up the shutout. Castro singles, then Bogusevic hits a ball to deep center – must have gone 440′ if it went an inch.

Crew 9 Stros 4. I don’t believe this. Tyler Greene is up, and Livan throws HIM a meatball and he hits it into the upper deck in left.

Crew manager has seen enough. In comes Jose Veras to face Brandon Barnes, who grounds out.

Crew 9 Stros 5.

Livan is on his last legs all right, but it’s true that even in this day and age, you still need mopup men. And old as he is, he’s never gone on the DL. Amazing.

Bad news is that I think we’ve lost the chance to grab The Sacred All Time Road Loss Season Record. But I DID get to see Bogu hit one out. When he gets hold of one, he gets hold of it GOOD. Now, all he needs is a good hitting coach to fix that swing…

9/23/12: The Final Legendary Weekend Of The Astros At Home

Monday, September 24th, 2012

Of course you want to know if I went. It was a really REALLY tough decision, but I stuck to my refusal to give Crane one thin dime. Bout tore me up, seeing as how it was the Last Weekend Ever. I even got out my Shooting Star t-shirt, even though Wandy’s name isn’t on the back.

Called my Mama. She said, sorry Baby Girl, Wainwright is pitching. I said, cmon Mama, one last time, Jerry Trupiano and Richard Justice are calling the game. She said TRUPIANO?? I haven’t heard him in a LONG time and besides, he’s not really a baseball. He is, TOO Mama, I said – he called games for the Red Sox until a couple years ago. She sniffed – like I said, DH ball. Cmon Mama, I said – it IS The Last Weekend and you can watch Wainwright on tape.

And she won’t really admit it, but she was glad she did. It was absolutely great to see guys I grew up with, guys I never saw play out there looking out at the 8000 fans who showed up. Mama said – well, with Jimmy and Enos (Cabell), it will sure nuff look like The Good Ol Days of the empty Dome. TV was great. Trupiano was louder, more, uh, enthusiastic (ahem) than our usual laid back crew, but oh man it was kewl. I know Richard Justice is a Bud-luvver, and he now writes bland blah stuff for MLB, but he’s still a DAMM good baseball man when he TALKS.

Every inning, they had a different Legend guest to talk. Enos Cabell, Jimmy Wynn, Saint Biggio, Eric Anthony!!! of all people – hadn’t thought about him since the 90s. Broakie-poo was on, too. Said that the job of a pitching coach is almost all dealing with the pitcher’s head and that pitching is indeed 90% mental. Said he often doesn’t even TALK to a new guy when he comes up (bet that makes the new guy a little nervous). Said that what he needs most to do is convince a guy that he CAN throw HIS pitch to the target. Interesting.

Dallas Keuchel pitched great – guess that Broakie-poo convinced him that he COULD throw to the target . 4 hits, 1 walk, 1 solo homer/7 IP. What is even more impressive is that besides the walk, he only went to a 3 ball count ONCE and threw over 4 pitches/hitter 3 times. Now THAT is listening to your pitching coach.

Best part of the game was Clint Hurdle getting himself some Blood Pressure in the second when a safe call was reversed. McHenry hit a ground ball, fielded by Keuchel and tosses to Wallace – bad throw, pulled Wallace off the bag, but he swipe tagged McHenry. Ump called him out at first. Wallace asked for a review from other umps, and – THE UMPS CONFERRED!!! Guess the HP ump had actually seen the tag and the runner was out. It was, by the way, the correct call – watched the replay.

I mean – seriously, THE UMPS CONFERRED TO GET THE PLAY RIGHT!!! What’s next? Dogs and Cats living together???

Second best part of the game was Jason Castro failing to get the bunt down with men on first and second and finally swinging away at a low slider and golfing it barely over the RF wall – right near the foul pole where the gate opens – maybe 340′ but hey, that’s the breaks.

And the game.

Beating the Pirates twice in a row. Seemed like The Good Old Days.

And today? Well, you won’t believe this BUT
1 – Jordan Lyles ran into trouble in the 5th – gave up 2 straight singles, then a walk. In comes the bullpen, who promptly lost the game – Wesley Wright let one run score. In came Mickey Storey who let the other 2 runs score and Wesley’s run score. Mickey gave up a single and an RBI double to stat the 6th, but got lucky because Chuckie Fick stranded HIS runner. Enerio Del Rosario gave up 3 more runs in the 8th.

2 – Bogusevic was pinch hitting in the 8th – had a 1-2 count and the next pitch hit him on the foot – ump called it ball 2. Bogu insisted that it had hit his toe (which it did), and THE UMPS CONFERRED TO GET THE CALL RIGHT!!! Seriously, WTF? Getting calls right? Guess they are doing their darndest to avoid instant replay.

Scott Moore was the only guy to get a hit off AJ Burnett – in fact, was a triple shy of the cycle. Brett Wallace got himself a Golden Sombrero. He’s striking out more and walking less than he did last year, even though he’s hitting for more power.

Of note – Jed Lowrie is still very stiff legged and looks like Derek Jeter at short, minus the jump n throw (NOT a compliment) and Tyler Greene is 29 and is NOT a good fielding SS – doesn’t make any tough plays, makes too many errors, both counted and mental. For example – in the 4th, Rod Barajas, who runs like a 9 month pregnant woman, hit a dead easy grounder to short for what should have been an easy 6-3. BUT he tosses it to get the out at second instead and Barmes, running on contact, beat the throw and everyone was safe. That kind of stuff is BAD for a pitcher, worrying about his fielders not making plays behind him.

Speaking of fielding:

Brandon Barnes is REALLY awesome in center – not quiiite Michael Bourn or Andrew McCutchen, but a darn close third. He makes the easy plays AND the tough plays. Man I wish Bogu had hit better – Barnes in center and Bogu in right – what a combo.

Fernando Martinez is a lousy fielder – bad jumps and I mean BAD jumps. He doesn’t look like Clank, because he is thinner and runs faster, but Clank was actually better out there than Fernando. I don’t know if the Organization sees something I don’t, but I guess it is playing out the season. Oh yeah – and he looked like Pedro Cerrano up there trying to hit the curve. He wants to stayin the majors, you know what he’s gotta tell JoBu.

Justin Maxwell – by the way, has 105 strikeouts in 323 PA. He’s only hitting .233, but half his hits are for extra bases. Saturday night, Jerry Trupiano noted that Maxwell swings at all KINDS of junk out of the zone because he’s trying to hit a homer every swing. Looks that way all right.

Speaking of legends, Chad Qualls mopped up the 9th – he’s 34 freaking years old. Seems like yesterday he was a rookie for the pennant winning team – and of course he was 26 at the time. He was picked in the 2nd round of the 200 draft, but didn’t play until 01 – was an averagish starter for a few years until getting called up at the end of 04 – remember? He had one really bad game in relief, but then settled down and was a really big BIG part of the run to the WC victory last day of the season. Him and Brandon Backe. Too bad Phil Garner didn’t use Chad instead of Dan EFF Miceli…

Saint Looey tomorrow. Yes I’m gonna try to watch with Mama – will be weird, her and me rooting for different teams.

sigh

Things change and sometimes there isn’t one darn thing you can do about it except shrug and move on.

9/15/12: Dallas Keuchel Pitches 5 Scoreless Innings For His First W Since June 23

Saturday, September 15th, 2012

It’s not that he pitched great, but he had pitched 4 games in which he pitched 6 or more innings and given up 3 or fewer ER and gotten only a L to show for his trouble. (Yes, he threw a lot of lousy OTHER games. Ignore those for now.)

In the first inning, he managed to survive a single, 2 walks, 2 SB with 21 pitches without giving up a run. He’s given 2 runs by a Jason Maxwell homer to the CBoxes.
Second inning, just a single to the pitcher – 19 pitches. He’s given another run with a bases loaded GO.
Third – leadoff single, 3 groundouts
Fourth – bases loaded again with a single and 2 walks – 24 pitches.
Fifth – HBP, groundout and a nice GIDP. Dallas then helps himself with a single, goes to second on a GO, then scores on a Brett Wallace GR double.
Sixth – double, then a groundout. At 94 pitches, he’s pulled, not sure exactly why.

In comes Mickey Storey, looks fine, gets 2 Ks.

Astros are leading 5-zip AND this is against the guy who has been the Phils shutdown guy for the past 5 or 6 weeks. This is like the job we did on Johnny Cueto a few weeks back.

Xavier Cedeno, Hector Ambriz and Wesley Wright each pitch a scoreless.

What is incredible about this is that we will get at least a series split against the Phils, who are trying to make one of those September Miracle Runs for a grab at one of those Wild Cards.

Tomorrow afternoon, Jordan Lyles tries to beat Roy Halliday. Who now has a 4.01 ERA, believe it or not. He’s been hurt this year and has not looked like his old Cy self, but just the same, he’s not been so shabby since coming off the DL in July – 11 starts, 6 W, 2 L, 3 ND, 6 QS.

And, in important news, mah boy Wandy led the Pirates to victory over the C*bs to snap the Pirates’ 7 game losing streak – closer almost blew the save – he had a 3 run lead and gave up 2 runs, so poor Wandy was flashing back to his Astros days.

9/10/12: Fernando Rodriguez Can’t Keep Guys Off Base And Jason Castro Can’t Block Balls So Cubs Beat Astros

Monday, September 10th, 2012

Yesterday, the Astros beat Johnny Cueto, one of the 5 best pitchers in the NL. Today, we lose to Chris Volstad, one of the 10 worst pitchers in the NL.

Go figure.

Same old leaving guys on base.

2 on 1 out in the first
man on first, no outs in the 3rd
2 on, 1 out in the 4th
5th: men on first and third, 1 out; bases loaded, 2 outs
6th: man on first, 1 out
7th: man on second, 2 outs

Same old sending in Fernando Rodriguez to start an inning, him letting guys on base, and Jason Castro, as usual, being unable to block EASY balls. I swear he is the absolute WORST defensive catcher outside of Mitch Melusky I have ever seen in an Astros uni.

It didn’t matter, in the end, because Hector Ambriz would have lost the game in the very next inning.

Dallas Keuchel only lasted 4 innings (82 pitches, was pulled for pinch hitter Brandon Laird – yes, the Astros really ARE desperate) giving up 6 hits, 2 walks, 1 run – don’t ask me how he managed to get out of giving up more runs.

But this is all good stuff, seeing as how the Astros are keeping a firm grip on last place, heading off the Cubs, who are now 11 games behind in the L column. Hehhehheh. Tomorrow, it’s Jordan Lyles vs Justin Germano, last in the news for being the pitcher who started the fight with the Nats, who were seriously killing the Cubs. It was to laugh. He’s got exactly 2 wins this season, one against the Astros, naturally. His ERA is almost 7, making him even worse than Volstad, didn’t think it was possible.

Hopefully, we’ll see an outpouring of suckitude and another all important L

And speaking of loss, Schafer is (hopefully) out for the year – he hurt his shoulder again with that lousy dive last night. No great Loss, unless you’re trying to win.

And speaking of Great Loss, Lance Berkman has reinjured his knee, not sure which one, they’re both bad, and is out for the year. He said he’ll probably retire, because of all the knee problems, and he’s going back to Rice to get his degree. Which is very kewl – lots of guys don’t bother, especially when they have more than enough money to do absolutely nothing for the rest of their lives. Lance has also said he’s going to be a student assistant to the baseball team.

I seriously doubt he’s coming back to the Astros – mostly because he doesn’t believe in the DH and he was very vocal about his unhappiness with Crane selling out the team the way he did.

8/23/12: Astros Hold An 11 Game Lead As Cards Sweep And Rockies Can’t Stop Winning

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Yes friends and neighbors and 2 dozen remaining Astros fans, it’s true. The Rockies have slipped away and have accumulated 5 straight wins, to raise their win total to 50, while the Twins, the next in line competitor, has 51.

HAH

They’ll never catch us now!!! The magic number still stands at 2, which will give us 41 wins on the year and earn us the title of Worst Team Evah In A 162 Game Season. Yessah, all we need to do is continue to suck just as much. Hey, EVER Body contributed this series. Bud Norris gave up the game loser with a wild pitch yesterday, while guys flailed away at Lohse, who gifted us with 2 solo homers. Bud gave up a lot of long fly balls and only struck out 1. Yeah, Bud, Mr. Strikeout guy, or at least he used to be. Wonder what Broakie is doing with him – fewer Ks, higher ERA and more homers.

Today, Dallas Keuchel was gifted with an appearance vs Jake Westbrook, the Cards’ worst pitcher. Even Fernando Martinez managed to hit the ball!!! When Keuchel came to the mound in the 4th, the Astros led 4-0 and the record was in danger. Keuchel came through, giving up a nice 3 run homer to make it close, and although the guys added another run, Keuchel went to the mound in the 5th, gave up 2 straight singles, then Brett Wallace couldn’t manage to throw the ball to Altuve and so Jon Jay reached on a sac bunt/E 1. Bases loaded.

Manager Tony De Francesco-ie doesn’t leave Dallas in to get slammed. Oh no. He pulls the boy (59 pitches) and sends in Hector Ambriz, newly called up from AAA, the only reliever left who had an ERA under 4.80. Armando Galarraga has been released and they’ll call up someone who sucks just as bad, but probably has a future of some sort, to take his place for an ass-kicking. Only this time, he won’t be surrounded by a high powered offense, poor guy.

Where was I?

Oh yeah. So Ambriz comes through to continue the fine tradition of suck and gives up an infield single, then a bases clearing double, to let all of poor Keuchel’s runs score. By the end of the inning, the Cards are up 8-5 and we all know the game is ovah, the question is only how many more runs the bullpen will allow.

Mickey Storey gives up 1, Xavier Cedeno gives up 1, then is pulled with 2 on, for Rhiner Cruz.

You see, my friends, the leftylefty rightyrighty stuff is continuing, business as usual, so it wasn’t Millsie-poo. Naturally, Cruz gives up Cedeno’s 2 runners.

Jose Altuve had his 45th multi-hit game. Fernando Martinez hit 2 doubles, which might unfortunately fool the FO into thinking he might could be a major leaguer. Steven Pearce has an arm like a noodle and he doesn’t know which base to throw to or what a cutoff man is for.

Day off tomorrow, then it’s off to meet the Mets, greet the Mets.  Who are eagerly looking forward to a sweep. I mean of the Astros, not getting swept their own selves. The Mets have problems of their own, namely a lousy team and a penniless ownership and an 18 mill sunken cost useless OF in Jason Bay (watch him get a hit every AB vs the Astros) and a 15 mill star face of the franchise third baseman who is a Good Guy and who they can’t figure out how to get rid of or bad mouth so that he sounds bad and they sound good (they should go take lessons from Boston.)

We won’t be facing Johan, who was flogged like a dying horse after his no hitter until his back gave out and he was finally put on the DL – like they couldn’t tell that a 5+ ERA over his subsequent starts might could mean something was wrong. I guess they figure that if they gonna pay the sumbidge 18 mill a year, if he can breathe, he gonna pitch, seein as how they don’t care about his future and they ain’t goin nowheres anyhow.

So, the only question is – can the Astros manage to keep the death grip on last place to get Stephen Strasburg out of the spotlight for even a minute? You know how his GM (and agent) have INSISTED that they are shutting him down, pennant or no pennant, WS or no WS, after 180 innings or so, and the sportswriters are saying stuff like if Strasburg were any sort of man, he would be throwing a temper tantrum so they could have something more funner to write about.

8/11/12: Astros Win Walkoff Second Day In A Row – 2 Game Win Streak

Saturday, August 11th, 2012

We get rid of Matt Downs and suddenly we start winning. This is terrible – we’ll have a really tough time reaching that all time loss record now.

Dallas Keuchel pitched very well. 6 hits, no walks, 6 K over 6 IP – gave up 2 runs he shouldn’t have because Brett Wallace is just NOT a third baseman. CJ looks like Scott Rolen next to him.

Wilton blew the save in the 9th, pitched a scoreless 10th and got the W.

Milwaukee’s new closer, Jim Henderson, can’t close any better than Jon Axford or the remnants of K-Rod.

Wesley Wright had another one of those days when he couldn’t get his leftys out, but Mickey Storey, who is lookin good, saved his butt by getting the last out. Mickey isn’t an Astros success storey, hahaha, seeing as how he was drafted by the Athletics in the 31st round of the 08 draft and traded to the Astros – probably after being put on waivers, last June. I love guys like Mickey (and Altuve) who beat the odds.

And speaking of Altuve, he just had his 40th multi-hit game. I hear tell that Luhnow refused to trade him, even for really good prospects. Guess he’s waiting until Altuve hits arb.

Pirates almost got no-hit tonight by Jason Eff Marquis (now with the Padres – bet he’s sorry he’s not with the Nats no mo.) They seem to have hit a wall – suddenly, James McDonald can’t pitch worth a darn and the hitting has dropped off and the Nats seem unstoppable. Their GM insists that they are gonna shut down Strasburg  playoffs or no playoffs. Why on earth don’t they just DL him DURING the season – you know, pulled eyelash or something, give him 3-4 weeks rest, then get him going again, if they are so worried about his arm. Not having your ace  pitcher in the playoffs is kind of not the best idea – remember the Cardinals trying to win in 04 without Chris Carpenter?

Playoffs. The Astros used to be in them. A LOT. I checked my old blog entries and scorebooks, and yep, I am remembering rightly. Those were the days…

8/6/12: The Astros Lose Because Of 2 Fielders Making Errors On A Bunt

Monday, August 6th, 2012

I swear to GAWD they find more ways to lose every DAY!!!

Dallas Keuchel kept giving up these piddly singles, 12 of em, in fact, but you CAN get singled to death – he lasted 6 innings, more than Edwin Jackson did, in fact, and gave up 4 runs, 3 earned, because Brett Wallace dropped the popup that shoulda been the first out.

Marwin had hit a homer in the first, so the surprise of being shutout or no hit had gone, and in the middle of the 6th, the Nats led 4-1, which pretty much means game OVAH.

But then Altuve led off with a single, stole second, Marwin grounded him to third and Edwin Jackson was pulled for lefty Gorzellany (who we know from years with the Pirates/Cubs) who gave up a sac fly to Brett Wallace – making up a little for the out that wasn’t made. Then Silvah Hammah (Justin Maxwell) Hi Yo Silvah, AWAYYYYYYYY, tripled to the RF bullpen and Steven Pearce, pinch hitting for lefty Scott Moore, singled him in.

Suddenly, it’s 4-3 and Julio Daniel is up and I don’t know whether or not to root for him to drive in the run, or at least get a hit, or remember that the Astros have to stick to the game plan of 3 or fewer wins/month to break the all time record. And he grounds out and I don’t know whether to feel disgust or relief.

But then, as usual, after Xavier Cedeno gets 2 leftys out and Mickey Storey gets his righty after walking his first righty), Millsie-poo sends up righty Ben Francisco to PH for Mary Jane Schafer, so the Nats manager naturally sends up a righty, who gets him, Corporan, and pinch hitter Bogu out. I think we now clean out of pinch hitters, so we’ll have to beat Drew Storen/Tyler Clippard with the lineup already there – which I seriously doubt.

I just absolutely HATE all this platoon crap. ESPECIALLY with the younger players who aren’t AAAA filler guys.

And holy moly, Froddy gets 1,2,3 out when he starts an inning – second day in a row. WHAT IS HAPPENING AROUND HERE?

Next inning, Stros load the bases, 2 out, and sure enough, no runs as Julio Daniel lines out to center.

Wesley Wright gets 3 outs (with a HBP in the middle.) NOW the bullpen is working?

In comes Tyler Clippard, The Closer. He gets Downsie-doo swinging. I’ve given up asking why he’s on the roster – just like Jason Useless Michaels the past few years. So he hits Corporan with a pitch and Lucas Harrell pinch runs. Don’t you like it when our best starting pitcher gets sent in to pinch run? Bogu walks – it’s not HIS fault Clippard hasn’t thrown a strike. Then Jose Altuve DOUBLES OFFN THE SCOREBOARD and it’s a tie game. Marwin Ks. And it’s Brett Wallace. It’s hero/goat time.

And naturally, being a good Astro he Ks swinging, leaving men on second and third.

So it’s extra innings time and you DO know what happens to this team in extra innings this year, right?

10th – Wilton Lopez gets 1,2,3 out. Craig Stammen gets Maxwell, Pearce and Julio Daniel. Oh man, you know who is left, right? hahahahaha

11th – Wilton Lopez comes back out and then I miss the fun because I hear #2 son, in the kitchen, suddenly yell a Word He’s Not Supposed To Yell and out I go to find out that Jana Brattain Dog has had diarrhea all over the floor and I have to take her outside and wash her off – (and she’s staying out, too) and clean the floor and next thing I know, Roger Bernadina has singled and then Kurt Suzuki, who hits like Matt Downs, has bunted and somehow, Steve Pearce has screwed it up and the ball is in right and somehow Bogu, normally a great fielder has screwed it up and Bernadina has scored the go ahead run so by the time that Wilton has gotten the other 3 outs, Stammen has come back out and all we’ve got left is Downsie-doo, who naturally gets out, and Snyder, who swings after fouling off a bunch.

So it’s Bogusevic, the Goat. Who I wanted so much to succeed this year, and like everyone else, hasn’t. And it ends up being Altuve who makes the final out as the Astros, as usual, lose an extra inning game – the 11th this year.

7/31/12: Jose Altuve Has His 37th Multi Hit Game And The Astros Go 3 Fer July

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

All Yovani Gallardo needs to do to regain his stride is face the Astr0s.

Chris Snyder provided the only run with a solo homer.

This team is just sorry.

Dallas Keuchel had a lot of trouble finding the strike zone – 7 walks in 4+ innings, no K. And he was pulled with 2 on no out in the 5th, Fick came in and promptly gave up a 3 run homer. Earl Weaver’s kind of game.

Should I mention another wild pitch and another stolen base against Snyder?

sigh

Cordero really stinks (he’s officially been removed from the closer’s role) Fick stinks and Rhiner Cruz, who gave up 2 runs in the 9th, stinks. And the Brewers are complaining about THEIR pen?

Tomorrow it’s Jordan Lyles vs Mike Fiers, RHP, age 27, who was drafted in the 22nd round in 09. You don’t wanna see this guy’s numbers because he makes Yo Gallardo look like a minor leaguer. He’s a rookie at age 27, and if he had been called up before the Super 2 deadline, more people whold be hearing about this guy – but it wouldn’t make no nevah mind with all the attention on Bryce Harper.

Oh what the heck, I’ll post his numbers: 10 GS over 65 IP with 54 H, 2 HR (his first start, none since) 16 BB and 65 K.

Husby has even stopped teasing me about the team being so bad – we just have bets about how many hits we we get vs give up. How many SB allowed. How many homers allowed. How many plays not made/errors. Fun stuff like that.

Forbes is estimating that the Astros will have a 39 mill payroll next year. I can’t figure out where the extra 10 mill is coming from.

7/26/12: Astros Continue To Surge Toward All Time Loss Record

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

Dallas Keuchel threw the first pitch of the night right down the middle of the plate and it was POW gone and the Astros lost right there. Neil Walker then hit another meaty one 425′ to the Hill, but that is where baseballs go to die, so Keuchel got lucky. But then Andrew McCutchen singled, then Keuchel threw another FB RIGHT down the middle and Garrett Jones hit it out.

Pirates 3 Stros done fore

Oh – half inning not over, sorry. Keuchel found some movement and got out the next 2 hitters.

AJ Burnett got 1,2,3 out. His ERA would be 2.68 if it wasn’t for that 12 run 3 inning game to start the year. Guess he didn’t like Noo Yawk real too much.

Next inning, first hitter walks, then Clint Barmes golfed a knee high pitch (mid plate) into the Crawford Boxes. At least it wasn’t right down the middle. He then gets 1,2,3 out – took 15 pitches, but he did it. Stros go 1,2,3.

Pirates 5 Astros nohit

Keuchel got 1,2,3 in the 3rd and 4th – the last of those outs being a very long FB by Barmes to the LF bullpen – 50′ to the left and it woulda been another homer.

Meanwhile, Corporan singled in the 3rd, so that took away any impending excitement of a no hitter.

The 5th was fun though – with one out, Sterling Marte singled, Walker walked, then Andrew McCutchen hit what looked like a perfect 5-4-3. CJ was on it in an instant, made a perfect throw to Altuve who made a perfect throw to Moore, only McCutchen beat it out and it’s men on first and third. So with Garrett Jones up (is he a FINE lookin White Boy or what?) and at 0-2, McCutchen takes off for second, only Keuchel has him picked off. Scott Moore notices Marte headed for home, throws to third and CJ fires a bullet to Corp-ie and Marte is dead meat.

Very kewl that the Stros have a good fielding play for ONCE instead of the horse-stuff misplays and errors.

Keuchel had a good 1,2,3 6th. Too bad he had a horsestuff first.

And except for a walk to CJ (yes, a walk) Burnett kept guys off bases through the end of the 6th and gave up a single in the 7th. Enerio-ie (or do we call him Dellie or Rosie or Sorry?) gave up a single to the pitcher, but got 1,2,3 out. For ONCE.

8th, he gave up a single, got a K, then was naturally yanked for a lefty to face Garrett Jones, who can’t hit leftys (see first inning homer offn a lefty) and then got him out. I was beyond shocked that Millsie-poo left him into face righty McGehee and somehow, he managed to get him out too. Will miracles nevah cease?

Burnett goes back out, throws ball 1, then CJ takes the next pitch, an inside high FB for a ride to the Crawford Boxes. Hey, there goes the shutout. Bogu grounds out, then Corporan homers into the RF stands. He can play defense (more on that later) AND he can hit? Imagine that. We should keep him up here instead of Snyder when The Catcher Of The Future comes back. Goo-bah Burnett. I thought fer sher he’d get a CG here. Brad Lincoln, former first rounder – 4th pick of the 06 draft, who is now a middle reliever, comes in. Downsie-doo walks, but Altuve and Marwin strand him.

Pirates 5 Stros 2

Imagine that.

Funny thing about drafts – Lincoln was the 4th pick, Andrew Miller was the 6th that year, and neither one of em turned into anything resembling a good starter. At least Lincoln is useful for middle relief – which, by the way, is something useful. Luke Hochevar was the first and he is still starting for the Royals, don’t ask me why, because his ML ERA since he started starting in 08 is well over 5. Youneverknow. Our first rounder, in case you’ve forgotten, was HS catcher Max Sapp, who never got out of A ball before catching spinal meningitis.

Where was I?

Oh yeah. So Rhiner Cruz comes in to pitch the 9th. He’s throwing in the high 90s and some of those throws are ridiculous – 2 feet in front of home, 3 feet to the left, to the right, above home. And Corporan CATCHES EVERY SINGLE ONE. NO (swear words) wild pitches/passed balls. Been a long time since we’ve had a catcher who can, like, you know, CATCH. He gives up a single, but somehow manages to get 3 outs.

Are you ready for this shock? THE BULLPEN GIVES UP NO RUNS.

I know – I can’t believe it neither.

So in comes Joel Hanrahan – the Astros are one of the few teams that caused him to blow a save this year. But it was a tie game then, so naturally we lost. Moore walks, goes to second on a WP, CJ singles him in!!! But thatttttt’s all folks.

We’ve now lost 10 straight and are 2 fer July. Really. we’re still at 34 wins and are on pace to easily break The Record.

Tomorrow is Jordan Lyles vs Jeff Karstens.

They’re calling up Armando Galarraga (TOLD yall) to face Wandy on Saturday. Arm-ie (I guess) hasn’t pitched worth spit except for that perfect game, since 2008. Had a 5.91 ERA for the Dbax last year in 8 starts over 42.2 innings. I can’t wait.

Wandy has thrown a few shutouts, but never a no hitter. I’d actually root for that.

7/5/12: Brief Astros Update

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

Dallas Keuchel has been sent down. We all KNEW this was coming the second he didn’t pitch a shutout. Seeing as how the bullpen is terrible, and there is no Ed Wade to pick up relievers on the scrap heap (betcha didn’t NONE of yall think I would ever praise Ed Wade), we have to get one of the 2 guys in the minors who can at least get SOME ML hitters out. So Del Rosario will be coming back up – Cedeno hasn’t been back down for 10 days yet.

Apparently, Matt Dominguez and his .648 OPS at AAA will be with the ML club tonight – no word yet as to whether or not he will be starting, but even though they SAY that CJ’s job isn’t at stake, I don’t never believe a word of that and neither should CJ, who should be praying that a guy who can barely tap AAA pitchers can’t hit ML pitchers at all. Dominguez is supposed to have a Scott Rolen quality glove, which is nice. But third is supposed to be a hitters position and he’s got to do more than just catch n throw.

No definite word at this second that Brett Wallace will be back up and playing at first for the rest of the year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they just call up Jonathan Singleton.
